You could always try Tetra Pond AquaSafe. You can get 250ml for about £7, and 0.5ml treats about 10ltr of water. You could do a 100% water change with just 45ml, so a 250ml or 500ml bottle would last quite some time! I use this myself and it has been fine.

I actually soaked it for 6 weeks until the water ran clear. Maybe it needs to come back out again and be resoaked... If I used seachem purigen, would that also adsorb any liquid ferts?

I actually wouldn't feed the fish. They can survive 2 weeks or more without food and don't need very much at all. Stop feeding a day or two before you leave, this will reduce the amount of ammonia and nitrites in the tank...

What test kit are you using tam0904? I used to have a Hagen kit and it always showed my water as 0.25 or 0.4 for the ammonia. When I changed to the API test kit, it showed as 0. Some kits aren't very good...
