Just saw two 'wild caught' Ngara Flametails at my LFS - they were priced at £90 each!! Must say I was kinda shocked by the price. Is this the usual sort of price they sell for?

They will come out at feeding time, but they don't really like exposed areas or bright light. So if you have some sheltered areas in your tank - it's much more likely you will get to see the knife fish regular.

I may have missed something here. But if the OP had ammonia in the tank a while ago - but now has 0.0 ammonia, and 0.0 nitrites, and still hhas fish in the tank which would be producing waste ammonia (which must be getting broken down to 0.0). How is that not cycled?

Only wash one of the sponges, not both. Also make sure you wash it in tank water. You will lose a little beneficial bacteria, but not much and it will repopulate quickly. You need to get the flow of your filter back up to full speed, else you are going to keep getting ammonia problems.

Seems strange. One thing that happend to me before is that my filter got clogged up with sand which made it run slow. So I got a small ammonia spike. Could be that the slow running of your filter is preventing it from getting rid of all the necessary ammonia. It maybe worth taking out one of...

Yeah, certainly do that water change. But you will also need to find out why you are getting ammonia. How long have you had the tank? It's possible I guess, that some beneficial bacteria we removed with the old substrate. Have you cleaned your filter lately, or made any changes to it?

Ok, I used that same stuff in my tank for 2 years without problem...so unless it has been changed - it shouldn't be the sand alone which is causing the problem. Was the sand washed? Also, to ask the obvious - have you checked the Ph levels and ammonia levels?

This may sound like a crazy question - but is it safe to use toothpaste in an aquarium? I have a few very light scratches in the glass (light enough that I can't feel them). I've removed scratches in glass like this before with toothpaste...however. Is toothpaste harmful to fish?

As the ammonia and nitrite readings appear to be ok - it maybe that something else in the water is causing them problems. Does their behaviour change after you do a water change?

If you don't like the Tannins (if that is indeed what is causing the tinge) then if you put some Carbon in your filter - it will help clear the brown tinage away pretty fast. But the carbon will need to be changed pretty frequently as it will only remove a certain amount of tannins.

Well the tank had a glass lid that was snug fitting, she was unable to get the lid off she tried from time to time, but could never do it - I could only do it by slipping a knife in there.

I have checked the ammonia and nitrite levels twice per day since having the tank (so both before and after the fish died), and they have never gone above 0.0 - thanks for the suggestion, but it appears the media is fine. I will try a few more fish and use the drip method. No idea what to do...

Bacteria will stick to anything in the tank. How much though, is dependant on the material the item is made from.
