Hi, I have a new tank and its been up and running for about two weeks now! I added my first fish ( gold zebra danios )
and they are constantly swimming close to the surface as they would normaly do when there is no oxygen in the water.
I have a bubble machine and have put oxygen tablets in there, so I really dont think that is the problem.
I have done PH tests, nitrate tests and amonia tests and the readings are perfectly fine and also my water is crystal clear.
I really dont know what the problem is, or why they are doing that? they're not eating ither!
Can someone please tell me why this is happening? or what im doing wrong. Thanks!

+ 1 to challdog. They will just need sometime to adjust. When ever new fish are added, they get a little bit stressed out as they have never been in your tank before. Give it a few days and they will adjust to the new environment and start to eat again.

Actually, it does not sound like the filter is cycled, so they are most likely suffering from ammonia poisoning. sassy_paws, go to the beginners' resource centre and read about fish-in cycling.

If your tank has only been up and running for 2 weeks then it`s unlikely it`s cycled, this would show testing results that you say are 'perfectly fine'. If it`s not cycled then the results won`t actually be perfectly fine like they should be.

What test are you using and can you post the test results please? Also, what`s your water change regime?

As the ammonia and nitrite readings appear to be ok - it maybe that something else in the water is causing them problems. Does their behaviour change after you do a water change?

You havn't done a nitrIte test. Nitrite is very harmful to fish. Seen as your tank is only 2 weeks old that is the problem.

NitrItes stop the fish from being able to get oxygen and they can die.

I would suggest doing a large 80-90% water change and get yourself a decent nitrite test

+1 to smells a bit fishy there,

Nitrite is not as potent as ammonia but it is just as lethal. You are getting no ammonia because the filter has cycled enough to remove that but not the nitrite.

I suggest lots of water changes and investing in the api master test kit to give comprehensive results that will help you maintain a balanced aquarium.

Also make sure any valves out of the air pump is on full and also (on some airators) make sure the airflow adjusting knob at the side is at maximum air flow as they will need it.

Don't leave it to chance!

i bought an api freshwater master kit and did all the tests and they all showed what it said it should show the ph was 7.4 and ammonia and nitrite were both 0ppm, i have now put my bubble machine on full blast like blubble37 suggested and they are coming away from the top slowly, im doing a 15% water change every two days. what are your thoughts?? :)

aah, then my plan is working. They are coming down as the oxygen concentration goes up!

Good luck

p.s, we love pictures on here! Please upload some!

oh by the way, what airator have you got?

oh and please, just call me blubble!
