New Fish Keep Dying!

Definately a strange one....

I've never heard of the actual tank causing problems. Are you getting another tank?

Yes, I will get another tank. I'm about to head there now - will probably get either a 40litre or 60litre tank to replace it.

The tank is in my daugthers room and there are no chemicals nearby (at least I hope not!!). It could be an electrical fault with the filter perhaps, though if so, it is mild enough that I don't feel it when I put my hand in the tank.

I heard rumours that if non-aquarium silicone is used, it can cause problems because it contains anti-mould stuff in it (to prevent mould and fungus growing on it, when it is used in bathrooms).

How old is your daughter? Could she be using chemicals in the room that are getting into the tank, such as hair spray, perfume or deodorant? I read about someone who was losing fish because of this.

Please keep us posted, and good luck.

Very strange, but if you've moved the fish and they've suddenly perked up it implies a problem with that actual tank, so returning it is the best thing you can do. You'll have a bit more flexibility with a 40-60L tank anyway :) I think in the end you've made the right decision. It is bizarre though.

Brilliant thought!!! This is one that I would have never even considered! :good:

Not sure how it works with but i aslo keep many Posion dart frogs, one big no no is sprays like air freshners and deodorants like the old spouse said it is a long shot but were a bit stumped on this i belive

+1, I do not use anything in spray form anywhere in the house, with one exception: glass cleaner, but the one I use is basically vinegar, so would not affect animals.

My daughter is only 5 years old, which is why we went for a small tank in the first place. I felt (and still feel) that a "massive" 60litre tank is too large for a 5 year old. Yet at the same time I want to teach her responsibility of taking care of things and she really loves having fish.

So anyway - I exchanged for a 60litre tank. Pets at Home had a "Fish Box" on offer, £99 for the 64litre tank + stand (with heater, lighting and filter) - which wasn't too bad.

Will have to see how it goes.

have you anything leeching chemicals?
you cant test for these .ornaments and decor ect?

Thanks Harlequins!

Chilly, I'm not sure if anything is leeching - but that's why I left the tank bare on the second lot of fish. They still died.

Are you sure your daughter isn't slipping something into the tank while you're not looking? Chocolate? Just trying to figure this out ...

Well the tank had a glass lid that was snug fitting, she was unable to get the lid off she tried from time to time, but could never do it - I could only do it by slipping a knife in there.
