I personally prefer veils myself.
I feel like they're looked upon as the trash of betta fish, and that makes me love them all the more. I treat my cts just exactly the same as my veils, so there's no reverse tailism going on there  but I think veils are just the most gorgeous little creatures ever.

VT's aren't the least prettiest.

Think if it like this. Switch VT's and CT's. Now the CT's are being sold everywhere, being left in cups at petstores (we will ignore the fact that sometimes they are). VT's are now considered more desirable (much like CT's are right now). It is just how it works... over exposure leads to underappreciation.

yeah, not with labs though  But seriously, that fish is cute and I like VTs lots too, he doesn't deserve it.

AS long as she keeps the water clean it is fine. Fish are animals with brains the size of a pencil lead. They don't have logical thoughts. Instincts rule their lives. The need to eat and reproduce. Other then that there is not much happening with them. Not saying that is how I would keep my fish but who am I to judge what your friend does?
Uhh... Thats because their heads aren't exactly large  You are an animal with a brain the size of your cranial cavity (is that the word? Ah well, I like it :)) You need to eat and reproduce, just because we don't know they think, doesn't mean they don't. How do I know you can think? Because we talk the same language, and only that  . Anyhoo, just wondering, where does it say its because its a VT?

Perhaps you should print out the thread and show her that people who know and care (with the exception of perhaps one) pretty much believe that her betta is living in less than adequate conditions and he does deserve a bigger bowl regardless of what kind of tail he was born with. Go ahead and tell her that one of my veiltails is in a five gallon tank (I wouldn't even call what she has a tank, it's barely a bowl - my cereal bowl is begger than that for crying out loud) and my crowntail is forced to "subsist" in a mere three gallon tank. Poor fellow. Which really has nothing to do with their tails but the order that I got them in and what tanks I had available. But anyway. If she doesn't think he's deserving, I'll take him. :) I think he's beautiful.

That just makes me cringe...poor little guy, and such a pretty color too. Geh, I could never do that to any of my VTs and they get treated just the same as my CT. It's just a tail people, that's like...favoring one of a pair of twins just because one has curly hair. :grr: Geh, people...

Since this forum is all about playing nice I will let this go but can assure you I will gladly match wits with you anytime you are ready.

P.S. If you really think that bettas are intelligent animals it really should not take someone of your IQ long to figure out a way to prove your theory. Now we all like fish (not just bettas. I am really a discus breeder. My 11 year old is the one that raises the bettas) but lets remove our feelings and look at it in a logical manner.

Actually....

My guys (and gals) recognize me. When I walk up to the tank they all swim to the front and puff their gills out (not flare..just slightly open them up a bit). If anyone else walks over...they hide behind a plant..then slowly come out to see what's going on.

They know which food container I am using. If I get out the pellet can they all swim to the top and wait patiently for me to drop their 4-5 pellets in each section. If I bring out the silver, FD BW, bag..they all go balistic.

They know when it's time to clean the tank also. I have a blue bucket that I keep my syphon in. When I get it out and sit it on the floor in front of the tank..they all go hide in the back of their sections...behind a plant.

Fish may not be as smart as a dog, but they are far from stupid. And they do think...even if it is on a smaller scale then ours.

Well, I don't know about the actual size of betta's brains, since I've never SEEN one...I would say at least, although humans' brains are humongous, we only use a third of it in a lifetime. But I do know that there is a visible difference in a fish when it is in a larger home, so they at least know happiness.

Your fish are conditioned but not intelligent. Some animals have instincts that make them attractive to humans. Bettas are one of them.

I have that same kind, just it's white. I guess I have a veiltail, too. But they're not cheap! 21.99 for one like that at my petstore! But then again, 99.99 for a kissing pink gurami or w/e it's called. My moores there cost 30.00 each.
