Why Are The 'clubs' Being Closed?

Just because nobody seems to have actually clarified in a proper way...

What, specifically, make the use of 'clubs' any different to use of the rest of the forum in general?

Surely, in fact, it makes everything much more difficult and irritating as it automatically brings the TLDR aspect into it...

BigC, the post that you linked to was started by a 12 year old, its hard because you however mature you can't really expect him to know the 'done' thing on a forum.

I'm sorry, but the forum is very different since I've been away!

Why do people think they can seperate themselves? I know! Let's make a post about Bettas.. In the betta forum and put a silly line in our signature and call it a club! I seriously don't know why they're doing this when there are sections for all fish, it's just a bit silly :)

It seems to me that those wishing to have clubs could simply create an irc chan to share their love of 'guppies', 'ghost shrimp' or 'Malaysian Trumpet Snails'. Easy enough, immediate replies, and no permission necessary.

It is not separating - it is combining - like a pub quiz vibe - pooling knowledge and experiences.

Anyone reading the oscar club posts with the thought that they may want an oscar would gain a wealth of knowledge to make an informed choice.

Not every Oscar post goes on the club thread - many go in the main New World Cichlid body and are responded to by oscar clubbers.

(I'm using this club example as it is long standing and the one I post in not to say it is any more valid that others)

Errr... Not really. All I saw was a few links at the start (which could just as easily go in the profile, and indeed be more helpful) then pretty much lots of 'oh lols look at my oscar', which could just as easily go in the photo section. If I wanted an oscar I would not want to trawl through 68 ish pages of what really only takes one post to say.

Regardless of all this debate surely 6 pages and 100+ posts suggests people care about the clubs and want them to stay?

Of what? This thread?

No, it just means that as per usual nobody seems to care for logical thought and reason, instead agreeing with whichever half-baked idea is flavour of the week.

I havent read through the entire topic so aplogies if im repeating anything anyone has already said.

I don't think there is any real need for the 'clubs' this is a fish forum afterall and the forum is divided into sections related to each species very effectively I think and all users will be able to post what they want and get help about a partucular species they want to know about if they post in the right section. The problem with the forum IMHO is that users do not use it effectively enough which is probably why these 'clubs' were created in the first place to give users a sense of 'belonging' within such a large forum.

The fact that there is no real prerequisite to joining a 'club' in the first place also is something that needs to be looked at.

So in conclusion ditch the clubs use the FORUM.

I'm not really sure how many times the Mods have to say, 'it is being discussed and people's views are being taken on-board and a decision will be made when all of us have had a chance to discuss the issues', before people really listen and believe that ' it is being discussed dah de dah de dah!! For goodness sake cut them some slack

Do some of you truly believe that our Mods, who give up their time freely don't want the best for TFF, they now know how you feel, let them do their unpaid jobs and let's just wait and see....................................

Ha!.... Thanks Sofia.... you've just touched on another important point here....When topics gets to around 5 to (53) pages...... all what is said inbetween gets lost...... Everybody goes to the last page to see what is current on the topic.....

Now, if these 53 pages (quoting Oscars again) were all broken up in separate threads,..... a lot more of it will be replied to and a lot more of it will be seen..... You all have to agree.

just a short question..... i have been away from the forum for half the day and whats happend? nothing, and came back to see that the same chat is still ongoing...
it doesnt appear to be the kind of conversation either to keep the clubs or get rid of the clubs, its more about the arguments between people,
lets make life a little easyer for the mods to come to a desicion on this whole topic and just state your reason as to why, or why not to keep the clubs.

i must say, if i was part of the mods and i was to read through this whole topic i would be lost.

lets just appreciate this forum for what it is, and let those guys do what they do best with the website.
fishforums has given me and others more information and help than anybody else ever has, and i owe that to the people who keep this site in order and running..

thanks, Matt

There appear to be two schools of thought here. Firstly, that these clubs form a serious pool of experience in written form (pages of a book, if you like). Second, that these clubs are merely a loosely connected set of posts intended for the fun of being a collective.

If they are intended to be a serious collection of experiences they require structure. I'm not sure how this could be achieved here. Certainly having one thread per 'problem' provides a structure of sorts but if the administrators drop old topics (which I am sure is partly about site performance) this gain will be inevitably lost.

If they are intended as a loose collection of fun posts (with or without value) I certainly have no objections, despite the allegation that they might be diluting the quality of the forums.

There is a fine line between facilitating an active - and dare I say it - quite young membership, and providing a valuable resource.

Yep I completely agree, and when you've got people putting "such and such a club member number 1234" in their sig as well as all the other crap they've decided to litter it with, it becomes a bit annoying.

I think clubs aren't necessarily a problem, but when you might as well just use the forum normally, which would benifit regular users, there is no need for them.
