See guppylover, they trained you with the chopsticks!

But to get back to the subject at hand, my advice to csr mel is that he(?) should decide for himself how many fish would look best in his 40 gallon, go with whatever waterchange schedule and feeding regimine he is most comfortable with, and don't sweat the other stuff unless he runs into some problems. Run your tank how you want, and come back here for info when things go wrong. That's not to say you should just throw any old fish into the tank though. Find fish that are compatable.

parents know nothing about fish. My dad had some when he was a ten ager as well and thinks he knows all about them. They also think you can overcrowd a tank with plants. You just have to say yes and pretend to agree with them. Even though you know what your mom says is wrong just listen to her. But dont actually do what she says though.
just nod and say "yes mum."
But dont believe what she says because well about the guppies its wrong. My mom also thinks a bunch of guppies can live in a 1 gallon.

so all that above means trust us here but just tell mom you believe her.

My dad knows more than me, after keeping fish for 30 years and starting my interest in them. I have had fish around me from when I was born, I got my first 10 gallon in first grade, and I have been getting bigger and better since. Not all parents are no nothings about fish  I'm only twelve and look at what I have now! :hyper:

We also used to throw kids in the back of the station wagon, no seatbelts, no carseats. We didn't give a 2nd thought to it then, but now, geez, you could be thrown in jail for it. We learn from our mistakes of the past, we now know having kids playing in the back of a station wagon (or pickup truck) is not safe. Same for fishkeeping, we now know keeping a dozen guppies in a gallon of water is NOT what is best for the fish. Geez,a dozen guppies in a gallon? Did they have room to move around? Did she keep all her kids in closets too? haha J/K :) Honestly though, are you sure she's remembering the size of the tank? 1 gallon and a dozen fish plus babies? Even back then people couldn't think that was right, could they?

Good point though about guppies being stronger back then, they probably also did not have the big fancy tails either. I remember my neighbor had a 10 gallon tank on her counter and it was FILLED with fish of all ages! I loved watching them and seeing the little babies. Nowadays she would be considered crazy and cruel to her fish, hehe. I have no idea how long they lived, but I do remember they weren't fancy like the guppies nowadays, just plain 'ole guppies.

You could keep a dog in a garden shed for it's entire life and only remove the poop once a week.

But that doesn't mean that dogs should be kept that way, or that the dog is content.

Fish deserve to be kept in a way that optimises their quality of life. Anyone who thinks "but it's just a fish" should not be allowed to keep fish.

.... my mum said you are all psycho and anal obsessive about fish and fish dont need so much space and care as you guys say. she says just because some people make a website about fish and tell you how they think you should care for them does not mean it is the right way. the 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon rule is crap she says.

....

what to do what to do.....
Lol - sounds like a nice reasonable lady your mum ;)

Some sound advice above - there's nothing like learning and developing your skills/knowledge in how to care for your pets better....

'what to do what to do.....' - show your mum this thread :D

www :)

People will tell you all sorts of stuff until they're blue in the face, but that doesn't always mean they are right. If something sounds seriously wrong then I wouldn't do it. We've all done things that probably weren't the smartest thing to do when we first got fish (or other pets). Example: people who get kittens let them chase their hands around and attack them. Which is all fine and dandy when they're about the size of a small rat, but try having twelve pounds of pure muscle, claws and teeth of a tom cat hanging off your arm while your trying to shake it off, or letting your puppy think it's great to play bite until that puppy gains about thirty pounds and bigger teeth. If you really want to get guppies and put them in the 1 gallon, put them in one at a time or something, then you can see when it becomes a problem instead of just guessing and buying a bunch of fish. AQnyhoo, just have fun and good luck. (And tell your mom she's sounds highly familiar to me, I have a mom too)

Well back in the day when your mum was a teenager or what ever you said they didn't have such finatics like us that care for lower creatures. (cept for hippies and naturists) Nowadays we actualy like to see our fish doing well and living long healthing stress free lives. That 1 gallon thing kinda does sound like it would work but it wouln't be good.

:/ lmao

then i can fit 120 guppies in my 10 gallon? lmao (tell her to think before she talks)

120 guppies = 240 inches of fish in a 10 gallon, wow

also, prices for fish are diferent

sterbai cories were 2,400 yen which is $24 is canada

in hongkong they were 3 for $10 which is $2 in canada for 3

so obviosly, they die, who cares i'll just get another school for 2 bucks

Go with what ur Mom says....................................................

then u can come back after all ur fish have died and do it with a little more research.

Then u can say "see mom u where wrong"

I just want to point out the fact that you probably don't honestly feel in your heart of hearts that 12 guppys were fine in a 1 gallon tank!! Now do you?? :/

To each there own!!!! I would say 3 is even too many, but I know people who still do it!! But TWELVE, that's a wee-bit excessive now don't you think? You've got to consider that they wouldn't be able to move around without knocking into each other and there would be no place for them to hide from the other 11!! -_-

But, like I said, I don't believe you would actually put 12 guppys in a 1 gallon tank so there you have it! ;)

Most info you find on fish ,IMO is just that...someones opinion. Everyone has different tank sizes, groups of fish, maintenance schedules, filtration etc.. So different things work for different setups. as long as you take it slow when adding fish and try to research each species requirements from a few different sources im sure you will find what works for you. Good luck and keep us posted on your tank.
I'll have to agree with this. There are some things that seem to work for everyone, but mostly you just have to find what works for you and go with it.
