A couple of years ago, when I was tighter for space, I divided a 40 gallon into 2 2 footers to raise killie fry in. I looked at it last night, and realized with the space I have now, I no longer need that. So today, I removed the dividing glass, carefully, and opened the tank up. I put a HOB onto it, replanted everything to cope with the flow, and now will cycle it. I left all the greenery, and the two air driven filters I was using in it, so the filter should be colonized quickly.
This caused a chain reaction. I moved my African tetras (Bathyaethiops sp) into another empty 40 I started a canister filter on last week, along with a pair of Pelvicachromis roloffi who have been right on the edge of spawning. That'll give them 18 inches more of front glass, and 15 gallons more of water. I changed the lighting, since the tank is low and I am tall. It is a striking one with better lights. When the plants really grow in, it'll be better.
Now, I could watch a Saturday night hockey game, but I am mulling over options instead. I think I'll use the now empty 30 inch tank to breed up a group of Glossolepis wanamensis rainbows. I'm due for another generation, the 4th one here. I can use another 40 gallon for my Scleromystax barbatus. I think I missed some eggs when I was super busy earlier this week, so I'll see if fry appear in their 15. I doubt it, but hope springs eternal. It's worth a try.
I thought I had lost my striatum killies to a brood with a huge number of males and one female. She died a couple of weeks ago, but I have five fry in her tank now, hopefully some future females. They're living with the panda Corys, who are doing very well.
We're under a weather warning for sustained freezing rain, so I sealed up the fishroom for the evening for heat retention, just in case. I installed an outdoor front door on it, and when that's closed, the room conserves well. I hate freezing rain. Last evening, sitting in my study, I could hear the storm surge surf crashing in down the road, but tonight it's all wind - very wild wind. I told the fish it was the incoming monsoon and that the Corys should spawn, but I don't think they believed me.
