When people have their dog's ears and tails clipped and docked, it's an extension from the breed's original purpose. Guard dogs had their ears clipped so that they could hear better (that's what was believed) and had their tails docked so that it wouldn't be able to be grabbed by the "bad guy" or hinder the attacking done by the dog. Dogs for hunting had their tails docked for similar reasons. Horses had their tails docked in Medieval Times so that the "bad guy" wouldn't grab it or chop it off in the middle of battle and so that it wouldn't get caught in the armor or tack. The only cats that I have known to be declawed are indoor cats so that they don't tear up furniture, etc. Dogs have their dew claws removed usually because they start to grow into the leg. Horses nowadays have their tails docked because they are used for polo, farm work, etc. I don't find these practices barbaric and in some cases serve a purpose. I'd rather prevent a problem rather than waiting for the problem to arise. Some of these practices are outdated, but are also traditional in some way.
