well ive started a small 3 gallon planted tank and was in the lfs today and couldnt resist buying a betta for it (he's currently exploring the comunity tank)

but his tail isnt a long draping one like most its the same shape as a females just bigger, is he still young or have i got something special ? ill try get a pic later

just had a quick browse in the fish index whats the possibilities of him being a Plakat ?

It is more likely to be a plakat I would say, unless it is a rather battered vt, though I think you would notice. If you can post a pic or 2 it would help. :good:

deffinetly not a VT his fins havent got a mark on them just shown him the mirror and he puffed his face up so its deffinatly a male

That's not strictly true. Females will flare as well. That's not to say it isn't a male pk though. They are not unusual or hard to come by and they are often sold by pet stores as females [I know, I have one] Put up a pic and let us see, flaring if possible as they can look different. :good:

Does it look like this.

If its identical to that then its a PK Male, if its similar but doenst have the long extensions to the pelvic fin and dorsal then its a female.

Its a Plakat (Plakad) Male, pretty much a pure bred fish, none of this crappy genetic fiddling to make stupid long tails etc. Generally very strong and can be aggressive.

Having said that, my chap is the softest smartest fish i own atm :)

rubbish pic

i bought him for a small planted tank im setting up, he's currently in the community tank as his propper home still has a yellow tinge to the water need todo several more water changes before he goes in

he's just had his first meal and ate well, currently inspecting the "mag-float" and thermometer

hes definalty a male, hes not saying PK to me he looks like a VT recovering from some fin damage. can you get a picture of him flaring? ill be able to tell you for sure then.

Agreed. Actually, looks like a young VT to me.

aw, he's a pretty little boy. Not a plakat, but perhaps along the lines of "round tail" or "spade tail" or he may simply be a young VT that hasn't grown his tail out yet. Those other two types occasionally crop up in VT spawns, so I hear.

Is that a dwarf cichlid behind him in the tank? If so keep an eye on the two of them because both fish tend to be aggressively territorial and it's the betta that will probably lose out.

ah! okay, i see now that he's only in the community temporarily. never mind then ;)
