WOW..YOU STILL FEEL I AM LYING...ITEM NUMBER FOR TANK ON EBAY 400004705769 ...TAKE A LOOK AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK THEN!!!!

i agree this thread has become out of hand its become peronal rather than fish focussed

chesterscot i totaly agree

OK Firstly, the thread has got way out of hand so I've reported it and hopefully one of the mods will come along, clean it up and move it to a section where you'll receive some appropriate advice such as the predatory fish section.

If he's been in that state for over a week I suspect that he's not going to reovery from it and while it may not quite be time to put him down yet you should be seriously thinking about it.

Can you let us know what the water stats for ammonia and nitrite are in the tank now?

One of the most common problems with ammonia poisoning is that the fish has damage to their respiratory system, does he seem to be panting and struggling for breath? It could be that the ammonia has knackered up his ability to absorb oxygen properly from the water, because of this he's unable to be up and active as he can't get enough oxygen for it but he's getting enough to stay alive....... just! The fins and other problems will be secondary infection from laying on his side over a week.

Unfortunately if this is correct then there's nothing you can do for him and it would be best to put him out of his misery.

good luck with your decisions and I hope you find out what's right for the fish.

hello...yes i think you are right...he is lying there panting and struggling for breath...i am only holding on as he does try to get up...but just goes in a circle then back down...you are right about the eye and fin...so do you think it will be best for him to let him go...am i being selfish holding on...

with anything like this it's very difficult to diagnose accuratley over the internet, and when it comes to making a judgement call weather to let a pet go is a very personal thing so I wouldn't like to come down and say definately one way or another without a more in depth knowledge of the fish in question.

Do you have a local vet who will deal with fish problems? I would call them and ask about it as they may be able to make a call based on a bit more professional knowledge than we have.

But on the balance of it, if it was my pet, I would be very seriously considering letting him go. :/

hi...i have phoned a couple of vets in my area...they didn't even know what a mbu was..so no help there...i think i know what i have to do...just hard doing it..but i know he cant go on like this...i know i have to make my mind up soon....thank you so much for your help and comments

Fair enough, I'm guessing it's not on the standard vetinary sylabus, my vet will rpescribe for fish for me but he knows nothing about them himself so i have to self diagnose, find some evidence to prove it is what i think it is and take that to him and he hands over the meds, wouldn't be able to get any advice really. :/

There must be a few vets around who are fishkeepers though so it's always worth asking!

v tough call to make, good luck whatever you decide.

Hello again Sharon,
I hope you do not mind me making a few observations Re: Vets and the current situation?
From your details provided the condition of the Mbu has been caused
Directly by 'Environmental conditions'.
Miss Wiggle has accurately described the ammonia toxicity and how it affects the breathing processes.
Medically a human would be given oxygen, some antibiotics to combat secondary infections and time.
This case would require some of the above, have you ensured that you have as much dissolved oxygen in the water as possible? (Additional air stones would help)
Most Vets would like to see the patient / pet before administering antibiotics (not possible without causing undue stress!) So a proprietary off the shelf antibacterial remedy from a lfs will have to suffice.
There is a vet in the South Minster area, who is recommended to be knowledgeable with fish and their diseases, however as previously ascertained the main cause here has been environmental.
(Details of this vet are not currently at hand. I will endeavour to locate the details if required at a later date).
Lastly remember there is a chance of survival at the moment. Please don’t lose this chance due to your desire to end the possible or perceived suffering.
Again good luck
To you both

hello....so do you think i should hold on a bit longer...yes i have put more air stones in for him...i have taken half the ornaments out for him..i have also left the lights of the past week..do you think that is ok...i do water test daily now..i also take my water up to my lfs so they can also test it for me....and the water is perfect at present...i get him in my hand and try to keep him up straight but as soon as i let him go he goes straight on his side again...bless him he realy is trying as well..but just hits the ornaments left in there or goes straight to the bottom face down..its terrible to watch...i know it is a waiting game now...but just want to do whats right for him

hi Sharon.
a prompt response to my post!
I can see you are resolute with your intent to learn and do the best for your Mbu, however
please consider not holding him, no matter how reassuring your intention,
Time is what is needed, not cuddles.
Sit back and let nature heal.
best wishes
Johnypuf
