Very Ill Mbu Puffer

Hello

Bit of constructive advice from experience with the Mbu ( a well experienced fish keeper friend of mine)

When buying a Mbu, you should NEVER EVER just buy a tank that it fits in at the time, and then move it into a bigger tank, and then move it to another bigger tank and so on and so forth

You should start out how you mean to end with these guys

Imagine a thermometer, every time you move that mbu, the thermometer goes up a little, and then again when its moved to a tank, and then up again when its moved yet again, this is basically how their stress levels rise, and eventually it will end up so stressed it will stop eating and die

Their stress level will never drop back to zero of that makes sense

So moving ur mbu again and again and again is actually making it ill

Having it stocked with the fish you have also isnt good news, and yes you are over stocked. I would bet my left arm that the reason your puffer is ill is down to poor water quality

Im not being rude at all, im just making a few points

If it were me in that situation I would rehome EVERY fish in that tank bar the puffer and keep on top of water changes to keep the ammonia down

And ace, you were slightly mean, not every1 has the knowledge you do, so try and cut her some slack, weve all made mistakes before, no one is perfect

hi..yes you are right...and have already put my tank and fish on ebay...upsetting but got to be done...i will keep just riley...he will have a tank to himself as i realy dont want this to happen to him again..his new home will be 9ft long..2 1/2 ft wide & just under 3ft tall...i think that will be ok for him..i just realy hope he makes it..i feel so sorry for him..he is realy trying to swim..but just cant...but i dont know why....i know your not being rude...and have made very good points...i realy am here to listen and learn..i have made a mistake and realy paying for it now...sounds silly ...i have an alaskan malamute and 12 persian cats..and i love riley like i love them...i got angry on here as i was being accused of all sorts ..and just getting abuse from certain mambers...i will need this site for help and advise with riley and his new tank...as i am not perfect and am willing to learn

i know what you mean sharoncc

Did you not read the comments?, 9 foot means nothing at all, What you are essentially keeping is a monster it will need more then a 2 and 1/2 foot wide. Three and a half foot minimum tbh and thats for a grow out. If you felt that sorry for him you would give him up to someone who can keep him, and If you knew about his size already and knew about what he would be like in the future why buy the fish if the last two you had to give away anyway? Stick with fish you know that you can provide for...?

the tank im getting is big enough for him...he is not a monster he is a mbu puffer...being a chicken pervert how do you know so much about the mbu....you are not at all interested in helping me...so back off...your comment above about jesus...DOUBT IT...leave me alone and go play with your own...and the last 2 i gave away was because i moved house and there was not enough room for the tank..but had an extetion built..ohhh how sad am i explaining it to to likes of you..
Oh one more thing..my last mbu Harry is in southend sea life centre and the aro is in a wall to ceiling tank in china...so as far as i am concerned ..wicked i am not!!!!!

You want me to be impressed because you had to give your fish away? Wait ill give you a clap....Just for you. THe tank isnt big enough for him and has been stated by other members that the 9Foot means nothing without 3foot+ Width.... Is it my problem you have an acute taste for fish you cannot house in a simple community tank, No. Is it my faught that you had to build an extension NO, so theres no need for all this mother teresa BS, bigging yourself up.

ummmm no just you oh great one !!!!

hey guys I agree with most of you and yes sharon you are being stubbron BUT guys we need to get this beutiful fish healthy first as this is the point of this thread
then when the fish is getting better we can inform her of how to take proper care of her fish instead of FLAMING her
come on guys be nice nobody likes to have a bad experience
also I am a lover of aros and puffers and I think the best thing would be a tropical pond for them that is a good 10'x5'x3'
now that would be able to let all your fish grow up and be happy

also sharon try #### as they are dedicated to these monstrious fishes

thats my 2 cents1

OK Firstly, the thread has got way out of hand so I've reported it and hopefully one of the mods will come along, clean it up and move it to a section where you'll receive some appropriate advice such as the predatory fish section.

If he's been in that state for over a week I suspect that he's not going to reovery from it and while it may not quite be time to put him down yet you should be seriously thinking about it.

Can you let us know what the water stats for ammonia and nitrite are in the tank now?

One of the most common problems with ammonia poisoning is that the fish has damage to their respiratory system, does he seem to be panting and struggling for breath? It could be that the ammonia has knackered up his ability to absorb oxygen properly from the water, because of this he's unable to be up and active as he can't get enough oxygen for it but he's getting enough to stay alive....... just! The fins and other problems will be secondary infection from laying on his side over a week.

Unfortunately if this is correct then there's nothing you can do for him and it would be best to put him out of his misery.

good luck with your decisions and I hope you find out what's right for the fish.

i agree this thread has become out of hand its become peronal rather than fish focussed
