All I need to know is simply can you feed ground up veggie flakes to newborn guppies along with regular flake food so that they get some vegetable matter in their diet since they need it.

Thanks a lot

Austin

I've never heard of Veggie Flakes before. Is that all they have them? What do the ingredients say?

Anyway, yes, it's fine, but I'd still give them fresh vegetables. You don't know what they do to the veggies to get them to that point, so there may be hardly any nutrients left.

i thought the green flakes were the vegetable ones?

i heard that from somewhere dont know if its true

OK well I was thinking of going up to my lfs to get some and feed the newborns flake food, baby brine shimp, and lettuce since thats all I know of to feed. And I should boil the lettuce for 30seconds to make it soft right. any other food ideas would be helpful. I am trying to raise all 11 guppies to full grown and try to sell them since I got them all for free with a total value of over 40$ including tax and if I can sell them I can get a nice sum of money. But the good news is that I might be able to convince my parents to let me set up my 10 gallon tank for a time to raise them in.

O it also says in one of the stickys that frozen food speeds up there growth and is good for them. My lfs's sell a lot of Sanfransico Bay Brand frozen food, what type of variety out of this brand would be good for them.

Thanks

Austin

Veggie Flakes should be great for newborn fry. Fish can not process carbohydrates (like wheat for example) like most other animals. The wheat that flakes use just kind of passes through so to speak. I have used Omega One brand Veggie Flakes which have a higher concentration of spirulina in them. Its somewhat better for fish than plain flakes. I would suggest using multiple foods though. I use frozen (well thawed out) baby brine shrimp for most of my fry until they are large enough to take on regular adult brine shrimp, blood worms and white worms. I would try tubiflex worms but for some reason I can't find it frozen in any of the pet stores in my area. I am considering finding actual live tubiflex worms but pollution is a concern.

Ok thanks and I was going to get some omega one veggie flakes this afternoon but is freeze dried food good for them, and so the specific type of frozen food is baby brine shrimp, any other frozen food?

and you say to thaw it out throughly. Well no matter what happens they should survive since I fed two baby guppies on just live plants and flake food and they are still alive and growing.

Please respond

Thanks

I wouldn't use freeze dried food (it is okay, but don't like to use it). It doesn't have as much flavor sort to speak, as frozen. :D

Ok I got some omega one veggie flakes and a flat pack of sanfransico bay brand pack of frozen blood worms. Any hints on feeding the bloodworms so that the babys can eat it. The package says to let it dissolve in a cup of water and pour it in. any hints

Thanks

Austin

Frozen bloodworms are hard to feed to fry, because it's hard to get them small enough. I use a pair of tweezers to feed them, and then I can kind of mash/cut them up a bit before I stick them in. That way I don't have to pour all the bloody water into my tank either. :) I wouldn't feed them to newborns though, I think they'll just be too big.

I would say bloodworms are really too big for most small fry. I wait until they have grown a little bit to feed them bloodworms. Baby brine shrimp is a great easy to use food though and works great. You can even grow your own baby brine shrimp and feed them to the fry, its easy to find in most pet stores or you can just buy a sea monkey kit and raise your own that way (but its more expensive). With bloodworms you also have to make sure to wash your hands after handling it as its a mosquito larvae and most people have an allergic reaction to it. I accidentally somehow got some in my eye one time and the actual surface of my eye started to become inflamed. So be sure to wash your hands after handling the food.

I have fed my fry bloodworms and they have eaten fine, I guess it is opinionated like everything, whatever you would like to do :D
