Trying To Breed My Cories

Have you thought about making a spawning mop? I'm trying it now in my tank to get my peppers to reproduce. Had lots of eggs but no fry as of yet. This is my latest attempt. I made the mop from black yarn, soaked it in old tank water for a couple days, and hung it in the tank. She laid eggs on the glass between the glass and the mop, and they weren't eaten and didn't fuzz out. Before I left on vacation I noticed the eggs were empty so I believe they hatched. I just put a big wad of java moss in there too in case the fry did actually hatch and needed a place to hide out. I'm going to be watching this closely. I don't do anything special as far as feeding or cold water changes as I don't believe it makes sense to vary the conditions beyond the norm so much that they don't know what the "norm" is after a time.

that sounds really interesting TOS. I'll have a look on the net for instructions on making a spawning mop - it sounds like a good idea :)

I'll keep posting any updates but right now ... I need another mature-ish female peppered corydora

I feel so sorry for that lone female having 3 boys hassling her

Pratical fish keeping have a guide to making spawning mops. Here is the link for anyone else wanting to try it :)

I hope that's allowed, I don't want to get into trouble :)

the first 2 eggs hatched last night. The other 4 look like they might hatch today at some point.

The first 2 fry appear to have swum out of the breeder trap into the fry tank - which what I was hoping they would do - as there is no sign of them in there. The rest is now up to them. There are only some platy fry of about 2-3 weeks old in with them and some baby trumpet snails. Providing they eat I can't see any reason why they wouldn't survive.

Fingers crossed for them :)

Hi
Why dont you get a razor blade,to slide under the eggs ,this way they will come off the glass without bursting,i have bred a few cories ,& this is how i do it.
Also when breeding cories it is usually done in groups of 2 or3 males to one female,& they dont breed in mops ,they prefer a firm surface.

I've not tried a razor blade as I was concerned it would break the eggs when they are so soft.

As for the spawning mop, I've made one and next time I catch them breeding I'll add it and see what mine do. I suspect they will continue to lay them on the glass but it's an interesting experiment.

This is the reason I've kept this thread running - I'm experimenting with different methods and posting them for others trying to get their cories breeding and keeping the fry alive

Thanks for your input :D

Thats the trouble, if you try taking them off too quick, they pop... leave them and they'll more than likely get munched...

You may be better trying to leave them for a day before moving ,this will give them a chance to harden up,,chances of them getting munched so quickly is unlikely.

The only catfish i found to prefer mops, were Brochis catfish ,very similar to cories, they would lay their eggs in the Riccia ,floating at the top of the tank,i never tried using mops for them, but a mop would be similar to Riccia.
I must get some more Corie ,as they are interesting ,& fun to have.

my female tries to eat them immediately after laying them. My platies like to eat them too.

Currently I'm having to watch her spawn and then follow her around the tank until she lays the eggs (normally just 2 at a time, occasionally 3) and shoo her away from them. If I leave them there they will get eaten.

Update on the eggs: I had to remove one last night as it was furry. One is very dark this morning so I'm expecting it to hatch today. The other two are looking good but not ready yet.

No sign of the two fry but I'm guessing they're hiding.

Planning a water test first and then a water change. If the main tank is running at the same PH as the fry tank now then I'll add water to the fry tank from the main tank and put fresh in there.

I'll you updated :)

well she's doing her corner thing again and that's becoming the sign she's ready to spawn again. It's normally about 2-3 days later that I catch them spawning ... got my fingers crossed for catching them in the act and I'll try the razor blade for getting the eggs away safely and I'm also going to try the mop aswell.

I'll post results as normal :)

Quick update on the eggs - I've got just two left.
I removed the other one this morning as it wasn't developing and was just clear - obviously infertile.

The remaining two are very dark now and I've been waiting for them to hatch all day but still nothing.

No sign of the two fry that hatched earlier in the week yet

just seen 2 of my peppered in the T possition then noticed 4 whitish balls on the front of the glass. and kind of tracks which looked like 5 more eggs was there but been eaten or something.

dunno what to do with them. i havent got the time or tank or take care of them so i think its going to have to be left to nature.

edit: just went to check and found 5 more eggs on the back of the tank and the peppereds in the T position again

defintely spawning then Staxx. You don't really need a spare tank. You can remove them from the glass and place them in a breeding net if you have one or if not you could cut a pop bottle down, fill it with tank water and add a bubble stone and just clip it to the side of your main tank. You could try raising them in there. I have tried it with limited success but it could work for you.

My bronze lot are currently going crazy (just done a fairly large water change) they've yet to spawn but there is still plently of time :)

yeah ive noticed a lot of slime left over and the platys are picking at the eggs. i think they have about 20 eggs total. still about 9 or 10 left in the tank though :)
