Top tip

Research all fish before you buy them and make sure they are right for you - but if you really like two types of fish which arent exactly compatible, you might as well try it out. For example, I tried a betta and a moonlight gourami with no problems. Remeber that some species will never co-exist successfully.

Be careful when buying livebearers, e.g platies, swordtails, mollies, guppies. They breed like mad. some livebearer species will interbreed with each other, e.g. swordies/platy.

Dont be afraid to experiment with decor.

It is better to underfeed than to overfeed.

P.T.
A men to that one!
My advice: PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE. This goes especially for cycling and buying new fish. Bacteria need time to accomodate new waste, so give it to them. You wanna buy that new pretty fish you just saw? Go back home and study it for a couple weeks. Patience is a virtue.

Research, patience and always use a quarantine tank when getting new fish. The lfs that I go to says that most people have something bad happen to their main tank once... then they get the quaratine tank. Unfortunately I am one of those.

Also, don't listen to the pet store employees. Just don't. :) If you don't know the answer to the question already you have more research to do.
