Toms 240l Planted Journal

no sign of it clearing so i decided to empty the filter and rinse it out, loads of plant substrate came out, so i guess thats why the water wasnt clearing.

luckily i only put in a little bit of substrate that i had left over so it wasnt a huge waste. it has made the sand look horible so over the next few days i am going to try and get rid of it all

why didnt you do it right straight off? all the fiddling is wasting time and money which you could spend on other things.....

probably, but i wasnt planning on emptying it when i just filled it up. im not fussed really, i have no ammonia to start the cycle, no plants or decor so im in no rush at the moment

came home today and no change. did a 100% water change and took out as much debris as i could. filled it up really carefuly trying not to disturb the sand. its now cloudy as it was before. any ideas?

A planted tank will rarely cycle!!! The plants are ammonia users. I put fish in within hours of redoing a tank. Mulm under the substrate is also a good idea to give the substrate an instant source of food..

i then realised that i hadnt put the plant substrate in, there was no way i was going to empty it again so as gently as i could i put it in the tank. as you can see it kicked up a load of dust so will now wait for it to settle before adding sand

Doh. Tropica is clay based and is now in your water!!!!

Always need to do things properly I'm afraid!!!

You will need a bucket, sieve and some kitchen towel and a large jug

Empty all the water out of the tank up to the Tropica. when you get to a point where there is only an inch or so of water left. Stop syphoning.

Get the sieve and put the kitchen towel in it. A couple of sheets. Sit the sieve on the bucket. Get the jug and scoop water and substrate up and pour into the sieve The water will go in the bucket and particles (Tropica) will stay above the kitchen towel. Do this until the lot is out. Use new sheets of kitchen towel until the whole tank is empty of water and Tropica.

You don't need to clean the tank. Just wipe the sides and front/black clean. The rest of the dusty residue can go in the bottom of the tank.

Now before you go about the next step get a filter off one of your other tanks. Squeeze a couple of the sponges and pour all the dirty water into the tank (this is the mulm and will seed the substrate.)

Use the jug and empty the Tropica back into the tank. Spread it as you go so you don't push all the mulm into 1 area.

Once you are happy you have it all in, clean your bucket out.

Slope the substrate as you want it and then add the sand on top.

Fill with water and make sure you put a bowl or something under where the water is coming in. Best to do the first third of the filling slowly. If you already have the plants put them in at this point and then fill the other 2 thirds afterward.

p.s. I answered you on the HC thread :)

cheers. there are no plants in there yet and wont be until i finished the cycle.

there is hardly and tropica in there. i have a 2.5l bag which i used in my 10l journal. i used half of it for that tank so i had a little left which i thought might as well go in the 240l. i will use your idea with the sieve etc now i think. thanks, will let you know how i get on

by the way, sand is in the tank. so i cant really do that. but i will empty and take the sand out, wash it and replace it then fill up

ok, the only way to get rid of the clay thats in the water was to empty the tank and throw away the sand. i will get new sand tomorrow and will have to wait fro aqua essentials to deliver the tropica which i havnt ordered yet. a real pain!

there is about 1cm of water/sand left which i couldnt get out. will it be ok just to put the tropica ontop of this and then add the sand on top, or will i get the same problem?

cheers

oh also got the ammonia today ready for the cycle

ok bit of an update.

got the ammonia, which i think is 100% ammonia so i shouldnt need muchw
also got 2 news bags of sand which i had to take home on the train but eventually got them home. i am now waiting to buy the new plant substrate (tropica) so when i get that i will fill it up and start the cycle.

edit: rite just bought substrate. should come on saturday so will get going then!

im still trying to finalise plants. i want:

anuibus
narrow leafed java fern
these will both be planted on a large piece of wood which will be on the left hand side of the tank

i then want a plant for the right hand side, im thinking a grassy plant

fish will be

6 angles
5 pitbul plecs
8 corys
2 GBR
then a large shoal of something (larger tetras)

ok well substrate didnt come, i guess aqua essentials dont deliver on saturdays, looks like it will be monday now.

have washed all the sand ready though

UPDATE!!!

ok so tropica substrate come today, so i got cracking.

heres the bag of tropica, 5l just enough for my tank.

then this is it in the tank, about 1cm thick

DSCF4597.jpg

heres 3 bags of argos play sand, ready washed
DSCF4595.jpg

first bag gone it
DSCF4598.jpg

2nd bag gone in
DSCF4599.jpg

and a bit oif the 3rd bag gone it, tried to made a gradual slope towards the back
DSCF4601.jpg

heres the tank with the lights on. then did a final check to make sure no tropica was exposed to the water so i dont get the same problem as before
DSCF4602.jpg

then started filling, used a washing up bowl so as not to disturb the sand, as i write this it is filling.

so when it fills, i will put the filter and heater on, add dechlorinator then test out the ammonia to see how much i need. will post up my findings

one question: whats the optimal temperature for a fishless cycle?

just went downsatairs to check on it and smelt burning. realised it was the heater. i turned it off, i rekon another minute and it would have gone bang

so nearly full now, will try ammonia in a min
