Little late to the party here, but as you've found out Kip, the API test kit basically lacks any reliability or precision. It may give you a decent idea of where your nitrates are, but I wouldn't trust it much. If you want a good test kit, Salifert, or since I didn't see it mentioned, Seachem makes a good one too. Good luck

Glad you could make it Kip, see you made a few contacts there and yardicus has promised you the Cheato so that was a good result if nothing else. Good bunch of friendly guys if sometimes a little mad, but its all in good humour. The committee are looking to get a wee hall around the Boucher Road area. so soon we'll be going for the club launch, memberships and a website etc ect. Ideas for multiple purchases and merchandise and buying trips to the mainland are all in the pipeline so we are looking to promote the hobby throughout Northern Ireland. Should be a good thing once we're up and running properly. There seems to be a great interest going lets hope it can continue.
No beers this time round Seff, Credit Crunch........

Ok Update time!

Tomorrow i do another water change!
i have added Rowaphos to the tank and a good guy i met Via BigC is kind enough to
donate to me some chaetomorpha
my Diatoms came and went!! i mean i got outta bed and they was all but gone
i have spotted some other hitchikers in the tank also.. one being a little clam! 2 little crabs still small though
this snake type thing really im convinced lol ..
i have ordered the CUC which might be here on thurs or fri !
i will get to taking pics again soon!

So you eventually opted for the Internet CUC, thats good,
Whats the stats at the minute.
Just keep an eye on the snake and crab situation, Not all hitchikers are good guys.
Last thing you want are coral munchers.

PH 8.2-3 this is a slight drop!! but then i have added rowaphos and this can happen!

nitrate between 0-5.0 new salifert tester on the way... LFS getting a visit 2 moro and a water change!!

oh Big C do u use this? Caulerpa racemosa! Gavin is sending me some!! ive read some where not to use the two !!? Chaeto and it

I dont like using Caulerpa as it can go assexual and release all back into the water column. Cheato does not do this therefore I prefer this over the other.
Dont mean to say you cant use it, lots of reefers use all manner of algaes in the sump (tangled mess) I prefer to keep it simple, works for me so why change.
Its really your call M8. See what Yardicus has to say and how he utilises his.
Tests look fine to me thus far.

Heres that snippet bout Caulpera

Chaetomorpha does not produce a number of substances which can create problems. Caulerpas go sexual by releasing its reproductive products and nutrients back into the water column which would degrade water quality. Ive decided to eradicate the Caulerpa racemosa that Ive been using in the refugium now that Ive added the Chaetomorpha.

OK Update!

on my way to LFS to pick up salifert!!

Cuc delayed due to bad weather they say that they will be with me midweek !

i have just spotted a dead crab or it has molted i will inspect it later....
I did a water change last night and i will test later today !

Hi again!
well after the water change i waited 24hrs to test!!

all seemed ok except the Nitrate!!! after a change and its around 75... !
i mean i did not expect this after the change!
i will test again this afternoon but the reading in the salifert reads Pink....hehe
ive been findind heaps of weird stuff in there also!

so! the nitrate what u guys reckon?

Are you making your own RO water or buying from LFS? Test it before you add anything you might find its the RO water you are adding that is high in nitrate
