The Panda Tank

My pandas seemed to spawn non stop for a few weeks to begin with, every second day, sometimes every day. They insisted on only laying their eggs in the java moss on the log, where my bronze cories only ever lay on the glass.

I got 4 Trilineatus on Monday, and only 2 hours after adding them to the tank, they'd spawned too. But they spawned everywhere. Glass, plants, sand, where ever. Hopefully they'll choose just one spot and make life easier for me to collect them.

Great to hear the females are plump with eggs again. At this rate, you'll have a tank full of panda fry soon.

Good luck.

:D

Well Heres another update: Despite my best efforts to kill them  im noticing black dots appearing in at least 6 of the eggs. Ive removed 4 eggs that fungussed over. What I think i can deduce is that they were laid the night before i discovered them, when my cories were bouncing round the tank. Now the eggs are beginning to develop and hopefully i might have some wrigglers soon *crosses fingers*. My greatest concern is what to feed them: I cant get liquifry, infusoria(that i know of) and dont have a brine shrimp culture: However i do have onhand: frozen BBS, live adult brine, daphnia, mysis, shrimp/bottomfeeder pellets, catfish shrimp tablets, Livebearer flake(with dried tuby), JBL algal pellets, a standard colour flake, another flake, algal wafers, and small pellet.

Would any of these be at all useful for feeding to hatchling cories?

I have used powdered fry food. I liked the Attison's Betta fry starter. I used the powdered fry starter foods, and it worked good. I wasn't able to get anything else when they layed the eggs. I was totally unprepared. It is necessary to clean the leftover food more often I believe.

I think infusoria grows in water set in the sun/light with plants in it.

I had more trouble losing the little guys during water changes when I was half awake.

Black dots are a very good sign. Should only be a day or two before they hatch.

I've heard some people feed their cory fry BBS, so that should be ok. I fed mine crushed shrimp pellets before I got my microworm cultures. Commercial foods are pretty good, but I found live food to be better. Are you able to come by microworms in Oz?? It was difficult getting the culture to survive in the beginning, but after perfecting the culture, I now make one every 5 days and am never without worms for my babies. They love em.

Good luck, I am holding thumbs that it all goes well. Panda fry are SOOO adorable.

:D

At this stage eggs still developing, and i guess should hatch shortly: im suspecting that the lower water temperature is the cause of the slow hatching.

As for finding fish stores that sell pandas: none on the east side of melbourne do, the main breeder went outta business.

Which town are you located in?

:hyper: Success: After fungus took a few more of the eggs(no surprise there werent many to start with)
I am please to announce the hatching of two beautiful panda babies. A third is very evident within its egg and likely to hatch very shortly. The two that are there are very active and looking healthy. Now that ive had success: What do i do?

Im guessing i need to do a water change asap, but where do i get the water from: do a new change or take water from the adults tank? What sort of hardness should the water be at? How much of this water do i change over. Do i need to increase aeration? and how soon should i be feeding them? More to the point what can I feed them: i can get microworms just found a store that sells them and I have found a place that sells liquifry and am going to get some tommorow morning, I assume i should be looking at liquifry egglayers. Ill try and get the microworm culture too. Should i be keeping them in a lighted enviroment?

*frets* :hyper: I need some answers pretty shortly.

Thanks

Having just read that im going to get the Liquifry in the morning. Ill also get the stuff for a culture as well. Wondering about lighting, and water changing concepts(i couldnt find this in your thread). How much am i changing and how regularly. How long did you liquifry feed them? What did you feed afterwards?

Hi Xebadir :)

Congratulations! :yahoo:

You might want to see if you can find any liquid fry food in the lfs. This will get them through their youngest time and then you can start feeding them flake and other food. The biggest problem with this is that it tends to make a mess in the tank and if not cleaned out regularly, the fry could get bacterial infections and die. This just means bigger and possibly more frequent water changes. I would use fresh dechlorinated water at the same temperature your fry tank has and change at least 1/3 of it each day. If it looks like it needs more cleaning, do the change twice a day until the get off the LiquiFry.

You will need to have some aeration from an airstone until you add a sponge filter. This just means the surface should be moving a bit to add oxygen to the water.

You might want to see if you have an aquarium society near you. Some of the members might have microworms and be happy to give you a starter batch. Joining one is fun too. One of the best features is that since members auction and trade their fish, it's often a way to get some unusual ones that are not sold in the lfs.

Hi Xebadir :)

I don't do anything else but use tap water. Unless your pH or some other thing is way out of line, it's not necessary. Once you add a sponge filter the beneficial bacteria will start to grow and by the time you taper off their daily water changes the tank will be cycled nicely. In the meanwhile, you are removing their ammonia.

In reference to my last post, here's a link to an Australian aquarium society. If it's not near you, perhaps you can email them for a list of others. Fish folks are usually nice people who will probably help you if they can. :D

:hyper: CONGRATS

I am so pleased you have baby pandas. Good luck and I'm glad to hear you are able to get some microworms. I know other people feed their cories other things, but I have found microworms to be the best. I hope you have some more hatch, or were all the others fungused?

Good luck. :good:

:D

So cool! I hope to trying to get something going with my pandas when I am not overloaded with other projects
