So it's acrylic then? It looks really nice! And yep that would be the montery. I like the look of it as well. It's complete with everything even sump filtration. It would be very easy to turn salty if I ever wanted to. Ahhhhh I hope he's up to something. If not, I found some very nice setups.

Yeah it's acrylic, now how do you clean this stuff without scratching it? Fish safe of course............

I like the way the top is built in acrylic but it looks a bit of a pain to clean with only front access points. Is it okay to use sand substrate or will that mean more scratches?

go to petco an buy an acyclic safe algae brush

Sand is fine, just don't rub it on there. You can buff the scratches if they annoy you. Just be careful not to put or scrape sharp objects on it.

Thanks MoF & Hambone,

Can I use a regular sponge with the plastic brillo thing on one side?

I have this exact sponge that I use to clean my glass tanks, never had any detergent on it ever:

no!!! it'll scratch it.. plus it's not a good idear to use those types of sponges due to the manufacturing process

Too late, I already used it......I didn't use the scrubbing side though, just the sponge. Tank cleaned up pretty good with a quick warm water sponge bath.

The light is pretty awesome too. It's a an older CurrentUSA unit called a Sunpaq. It has 2x65 watt bulbs that're half daylight white & half actinic blue. It even has (2) working LED night lights, whoohoo! They're kinda dim though. I should be able to change out the LED's for some new, brighter ones. I work at a Sign company and they use LED's to illuminate our signs. It should be no biggie to change them out, even if it requires soldering the new ones in place. The LED's have an independent cord too, so I can put them on a separate timer.

The tank included an undergravel filter that I don't plan to use, but it also came with an Marineland Emperor 280 biowheel. Sweet backup filter anyway, but I plan to use my new Rena XP2 canister filter in conjunction with the Marineland Penguin 200 biowheel that's currently running Zach's 20 gallon. In theory I should be able to add sand substrate to the new 55 gallon, let it clear & settle, add the Penguin 200 and all the fish in that 20 gallon tank all at once. Eventually adding the Rena XP2 and that will cycle that filter's media over time.

The big picture has me swapping the Rena XP2 out for the XP3 on my 36 bowfront. Both filters will be cycled already and it just makes sense to have the larger filter on the larger tank.

Hey Lovelies!!!!

I am starting to get a dominant body color in my guppy fries that I dont particularly care for, I dont care for the solid black lower half of the guppy body, so I started culling my fries that are showing such colors.. got one culled yesterday.. My beta took care of him.. This half moon beta I got is awesome, he's not a fin nipper, but he will eat a fries or twenty.. Got a wild guppy in the breeding box, curious to see who the pappy is.. If it's wild fries I wont be able to tell, I hope one of my fancy males tagged her, so I get some semi's going soon..

juss make sure if you're going to swap out the led's you find out the wolatge and current ratings of the new led's or maybe more importantly figure out how much power your led power supply can output. I'm juss saying because unless you match the voltage and current, you might not get the results you expect, or if your leds draw too much current, you might blow your power supply or dewelope some sort of other electronical problem.

Yeah, thanks again Hambone. I won't do it alone, I have a whole shop of sign builders behind my effort. The easiest way is to get a separate power supply & (2) dual LED pods.........but I'd rather change the LED's in the actual unit. It would look cleaner that way & the power supply is already on that cord. The LED's work right now but they're very dim, which happens to all LED's when they get old & spent. I may have to contact the manufacturer and see if I can buy the exact Light Emitting Diodes that came with the unit. I'm no stranger to a soldering iron........

oh hecks yeah... next time I'm down in the north kackolacky woods I'll stop by with my variable temp Weller, and we'll lay down some flux micro-miniature stlye! Noam-sayen? Get stupid with the wicking and be sure that no cold solder joints are to be found on our circuit boards!

Hey Lovelies!!!

sitting here, I juss figured out where my next tattoo is going to go..

I was going to get tatted on Sat, but got a nasty headache in the afternoon so I had to cancel.. glad I did.. totally different spot from where this tat would has went..

I still love the "solder sucker," makes for a clean smooth joint........

You're welcome to stop by my house any time you're in the area. :good:

Hey lovelies,
Cleaned my filter sponge today for the first time since May. Forgot to put a jug under the inlet to catch the gurge as I turned it back on afterwards. Now I know how to achieve that genuine muddy river look!
Mind you, it's now pumping the water through 50% faster than it was. :)
