Oh that's good stuff! While reading this, I recall the days when we were using under-substrate heating cables in our planted tanks to replicate the upwelling effect. I 'peeled the onion' on that concept for one of my plant columns and didn't make any friends with the manufacturers!
There is hope with out of the box thinking. Those guys are fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

The hyporheic zone is a bit bigger than my aquaclear sponge. But it is going to be fantastic to learn about. My reading for the next few weeks is set.
