The Adventures Of A Marine Newbie...

Do mushroom corals move around?
I ask because the small red mushroom has vanished leaving no trace! It's either upped sticks and left or been munched by someone...Fanny wanted a change of menu perhaps?

I've fitted the led strip and I am most pleased with it! I love the fact that it's dimmable. The Shroom really glows under its light :D

Perfecto! Bring on the darkness!

Here's some pics of Spongebob Flatpants my little yellow sponge- yet another hitchhiker. He's doubled in size at least and has little tubules and holes all over him now

The spaghetti worm is building a pipeline across the tank to get to the other side incognito

and here is a mysterious group of bright orange fleshy blobs...think Dynarod orange but a bit brighter
Fanny's got her eyes on it

Bizarre eh? I hope it sticks around and grows into something groovy
Shroom has opened up for a feed minus it's minime :(

A new coral tomorrow methinks - home marine/wildwoods/amwell visits on the cards :D

Yeah mushrooms can detach themselves to move to a different area. The do this if the spot they are in is overcrowded (to start new colonies) or if the conditions aren't quiet right where they are. I bought I really pretty one awhile ago but it was only just hanging onto the rock when I got it, put it in on the evening and by the next day it had vanished :(

Think the orange bits are a type of algae. I have some of this but it is red, hasnt spread very much and is only on 1 bit of rock so I have left it alone.

Hi Jenny, i wish i had the luck to get hitchikers like you  your tank is progressing very nicely :good:
"I don't believe it" regarding my luck either VM
The mysterious orange blobs have shrumk and gone so heaven only knows what they were!

Anyhoo, I've been shopping today...
I have my eye on a really cute baby cleaner shrimp, but it's corals time at the moment.
The shop tested the water for me as per normal and all was really groovy so I purchased 2 ricordea corals and a trachy, all 3 of which are highly flourescent! :hyper:

I've since moved the ric that was lower as it got blown off it's perch. It's now settled round the side of the tank in a more sheltered location :D

I've also moved the trachy onto the sand bed after more researching and advice from some Wise Ones :D
There seems to be a difference of opinions about feeding 'The Brain' (I need a 'Pinky' now) or not feeding The Brain. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Cant help regarding the brain im afraid. Nice looking corals though, wish my LFS had stock like that. Went to two today and all they had where some rather boring looking mushrooms, brown zoa's and half dead SPS's :( was going to buy some yellow polyps but im not paying £15 for a rock with 3 polyps on!

That's understandable!

I've spent most of the evening relocating the uppermost ricordea. It's either been taking offence to where I put it earlier and going sky diving or it's just finally been blown off its perch  I had a major thrombo when the minx disappeared out of sight completely...I had to move all the blooming rock to get to it as it had found its way right down the back of the stack :shifty:

I understand I can use a dab of superglue to keep it in situ?

The Brain is now on the sand bed and my eyes were being drawn back to it every few seconds. As I was gazing at its beauty it seemed to give a 'sigh' and shrunk. I was convinced it was giving its last breath

The moonlights are on at the moment but no tentacles, so I guess it's not hungry. I shall just give it time to settle, get a turkey baster, some super glue, some suitable food and in the meantime TRY not to panic any more

I feel like a new mother and I just know I am going to have to tie myself down to the bed tonight to stop me getting up in the wee small hours to check that everything's alright! :look:

not sure about superglue on mushrooms. Think it might be ok. The other option would be to get a shallow bowl/dish with some rock rubble in it. Put that in the tank, put the mushroom in there and put a net over the top to stop it blowing away. After a week or two it should have attached to something and then you can milliput the rock its attached to where you want it. Milliput by itself on the mushroom wont stick it.

The rics have got the minutest bits of rock attached to them - something to do with US regulations about exporting live rock frags at the moment so I was told.
The ric in question was still where I left it last night but I do have some D-D putty that I was going to try. I am concerned with harming the corals seeing as there's such a tiny bit of rock they're attached to. Your advice about the bowl is a good one Barney so I may try that if I need to - thanks :D :good:

I have been told what superglue I can use (obviously not directly on the animal, just on the frag of rock it's attached to) btw :)

I HAVE TENTACLES! Well not me personally of course

I fed George and Mildred when I got in and look who came out to feed in broad daylight...

The Brain was obviously hungry

The nomadic ricordea has been moved yet again...it's now round the side with it's sibling until I get some superglue.

I've just had another glance at The Brain and it's tentacles are out even more again :D

I have also moved the left hand nano now. It's further back and a bit lower down so it's not directly facing the Hydor Flo. Guess what...fewer microbubbles!
I still have to resolve the pump bubbles as the pipe I bought was too big. Underwater sealant has been ordered.

So, tentacles out, fewer microbubbles and another relocation for the nomadic ric and I'm leavign it at that for tonight :D

lol maybe only the brits will find this funny but the sentence "Fanny is getting bolder as well" is just so, so wrong!! (sorry :) )

Looking good though :)

Oh I think some of our overseas members will know what you mean

There have been numerous comments on other forums I have to admit

I need suggestions for pink corals so I have a Pinky to go with The Brain now :shifty:

Colt corlas, Kenya trees and xenia all spring to mind for soft corals that are normally available in pink.

Thanking you! :D

I like xenia but am I correct in thinking that it grows like stink?
I love pulsing xenia(?) :D
