The Adventures Of A Marine Newbie...

Just seen a red mushrrom that colour for £55.
Was a fair bit bigger but it shows how good of a hitchhiker you got there.

Oh yeah, dont expect to see the peppermint shrimp too often. I have 3 in my tank and only occasionally see one at feeding time. Mine did a great job on the aiptasia I had though.
As long as I know it's healthy and it eats all the aips I'll be pleased it's there

I was quite surprised when someone told me red mushies are a bit rare

By lights out last night it was twice the size of the photo!

I had a dream last night that the thing kept on growing and growing and ended up covering everything on the floor of the tank

Fanny has shed a skin already!
Can you see half of it behind the white spongey thing? What is that btw? Is it just a sponge? I have a yellow one on the other side called Spongebob Flat Pants

She's blushing more too and in this shot looks more like a fire shrimp I think it's called

I am one happy bunny :D

looks like you have a fair bit of flow in there! Looks very nice and clean also.
Plans for other fish or coral yet?

2 Koralia nanos, 1 mj 1200 with added Hydor Flo. The clowns seem to be ok with the flow :D

Well, as plans go I have a million of them

I basically want to have mainly softies in the tank as I think the stock lighting will limit me to them really.

Fish wise I have a wish list...some of these but not all of them, obviously and if any of these are a stupid idea please let me know as it's not a definite list as such :)

bicolour blenny - saw one at an LFS and fell in love with it on sentry duty on its rock

Yashi goby and shrimp combo - or I know where a mated pair can be obtained

firefish - red or purple although I have heard they can be good jumpers?

clown goby

pyjama or banggai cardinal (maybe)

1 skunk cleaner shrimp

Quite a standard wish list but what do you recon? :D

Cant see any issues with any of that stock list (though obviously not all of them will fit together :) ). The goby/shrimp pair would work really well.

Firefish are jumpers but if your tank is covered its not an issue (mine has tried to jump out a couple of times when Im cleaning the glass as it hates the magfloat). There are a few LPS corals you could probably keep under power compacts (torch, hammer and bubble corals for example).

Really going to enjoy watching this one progress :) Oh yeah like ben said how come it all looks so clean!!!

the fire fish i had for a while was very timid and boring, then it decided to die on me. Got a blenny instead and hes so entertaining.

The red firefish I had in my nano was very timid and spent a lot of time hiding but the purple one I have in the bigger tank now is always out and about (except when I'm cleaning the glass or when the lights go off, then he goes back to his cave). Not sure if its the difference between the red ones and the purple ones or if its just because he is in a bigger tank.

It looks so clean because it's 4 weeks old maybe?
I like bubble and hammer corals so that may be exciting to try!
I saw some ricordia (?) in my LFS recently and I understand they need a fair bit of light? Would they be ok if I tried one at the top of the tank do you think?

I may stick with the bicolour blenny then.

I've read that purple firefish can be a touch boysterous and was thinking maybe a red one as I love the fact they look like they've been airbrushed. The reds are smaller than the purples are they not?

Thinking out loud for a mo...

I have the clowns who seem to be happy at all levels of the tank, the shrimp/goby combo would be good for the bottom level if I decide to go with that, so was thinking either clown goby or firefish for a bold splash of colour in contrast to the clowns.

I do like all this planning speak. It's quite thrilling altho my BF would probably laugh at me for saying that. He finds it thrilling to sit on the PS3 for hours and I laugh at that so I guess we're even

I would think ricordia would be ok in your tank. I havent personally kept them though so someone knows more than me (so anyone :p) will be able to confirm.

I havent noticed any aggression with my purple firefish at all but its the only one I have ever kept so dont know if this is just a mellow fish or if they are all similar. The red ones are pretty as well though.

The firefish and goby sound like a good idea to me. If you wherent planning on shrimp I would suggest a scarlet hawk fish, these are really stunning looking fish and great to watch but they do tend to eat shrimp.

lol about your boyfriend. I'm always boring my friends with talk about my tank guess if everyone was interested in the same stuff the world would be pretty boring :)

It sure does take all sorts to make the world go round - I am fond of saying variety is the spice of life

It is so fascinating to sit her and watch my 'shroom' moving! I have been watchign it open its mouth too...nose pressed against the glass and everything. I must look at it with my specs on. It won't be in soft focus then

I've noticed on the coraline on the rock that some of it was flourescent pink last night. It even glowed under the moonlights. These patches have now gone white and I have a few new flourescent bits. I am wondering if it's where the snails have been chowing down on the coralinea bit too much in places, although I have heard of die off...does it go bright pink first though?

Just a few thougths about the fish.

I had a firefish and it was a great fish, always swimming around... until I added my midas blenny. The midas was alot bigger than the firefish, but he diefinately wasn't agressive. But it still made Fire skttish and he wouldn't come as far out. When I added my clownfish, it was the same, I was him less and less. Then after a pair of flame hawks he would barely leave his small cave. Now I don't have any hope for him.. I haven't seen him in weeks. And its not like the other fish are chasing him around or anything, he's just scared.

I would highly recommend the blenny, my midas blenny is my favorite, tons of personality. I would also recommend flame hawkfish. Mine have never touched any snails or hermits of any size, and they left my cleaner shrimp (which were added first) alone as well.

I would like the goby and shrimp combo for the bottom really. My wish list is just that but I would like a fish that I get to see occasionally

The flame hawkfish wasn't one I had looked at, admittedly, but seeing as I will hopefully have the cleaner shrimp along with the peppermint and a shrimp pal for the Yashi, would it be a good idea? I like the fact that they look startled
