this is more of a ranting post, i dont' mean to create any controversy, balh blah balh, disclaimer blah blah blah

anywyas, my firend has like a very big tank, about 30G at least i think. Unfournately i was just talking to her and she siad she doesn't really bother with what she puts into the tank  aparently her and her brother just goes out to the fish store, find a pretty fish that looks nice and throw it in the tank...who cares if they're compatible or not

I showed her a picture of the krib that i wanted and she asid she wanted them too....when in fact i asked what she had in HER tank she didnt' even know, sh couldn't even NAME the fish that was in her tank! she just knew that she had 2 angelfish.

She's just so naive about the fish it makes me sad :-( she wanted to put a betta in the tank but i convinced her not to becuase all her other fish would be killed. I told her to resarch on the kribs before throwing them in like that...*sigh* somethings jus never go through. :-( some people are just so igornat about the fisht aht they get....if it look spretyt lets just buy it and put it in the tank :(

Man. I spend like a month researching a fish before I even think about buying it. I want to make sure it is going to thrive in my tank and get along will all the other fish in the tank.

Some people don't understand that keeping fish in a bad tank environment is like locking a man in a jail-cell full of sex hungry bullies.... ITS NOT NICE.

The only thing you can do is to not be afraid to give people your educated opinion and to advise her what is right to do.

Just remember, many animals not just fish are abused every single second of every day in one way or another and keeping a healthy aquarium that isn't overstocked or dirty is a step in the right direction if you are going to keep them in captivity :)

In todays society, fish are viewed as a disposable decoration. Its not her fault she thinks that way. The best you can do is educate her and show her what a healthy thriving tank looks like. Im willing to bet that if she keeps a fish healthy and sees the personalities these "decorations" have, her mindset will start to change.

i think i'm missing something...

exactly why would having a betta kill her other fish?

heh... thats half the fun of setting up an aquarium. personally, i find it more enjoyable researching every single aspect of my tank before i set it up. it took me over 2 months of planning and research to set up my first one (just got fish sunday :D )

becuase she's taking a huge risk when she doens't even know what's in her tank. For all i know she could have gouramis in there, she coul dhave guppies and other fishies that bettas wont' like :(

anyway si've tried to tell her that she should reserach the fish, but she just deosn't CARE enough to do it you konw. i can undersatnd it becuase some people would just use fish as a pretty "decoration" and show it to firends/relatives when poeple come over. and then there are poeple who have fish just so they can take care of them.

Hi cutecotton :)

Her "decorations" won't be very pretty for long if she doesn't take proper care of them!

Do you think it could be that she's just overwhelmed by the whole thing? :dunno:

I'm wondering if she might have started out taking the advice she got in some lfs and doesn't even know the basic science part of the hobby. It's easy for someone to get in over their heads, so to speak, with fishkeeping. And she might be embarrassed to admit it. :*)

Perhaps you might encourage her to join the forum. Here, using a screen name, no one would know her, and while she might have to put up with a rude comment or two about her way of doing things, she would be able to learn the basics and go on from there. Beside, the forum is a friendly place that she would surely come to enjoy.

I know how you feel. I have a friend that has a little 5 gallon in her apartment. It was overstocked with about 10 fish, so of course they all died...except the albino cory. So now the hardy little cory is all by himself and still kickin' even though she hasn't fed him or cleaned the tank.

yeah i'ts really sad :( good idea inchworm, i think she may have became overwhlemed or something by teh whole thing, or maybe she's just embarassed. Over the wekened she plans to go get more fish with her brother becuase she was "bored of waht they had now". IMO, you should never be bored of your fish.

Anyways, maybe one day if i go to her house i can identify some of the fish for her. I'd give her advice but i have no clue what she has in the tank to start  i figure if i can ID some of hte fish for her, ic ould tell her a bit more about them and maybe she'll get interested :)

Maybe ask her if you could come over and see her tank and then join her on her fish store trip. That way you would be able to help her and get to spend time with your friend.

My sisters friend has gone through 23 goldfish in ten weeks! And my mums friend buys a new betta each week because they keep dieing. Some people don't learn do they.

That reminds me of a friend of mine...she had one of those all in one tanks....like 5 gallon or something...with 2 angels, a fluro green dyed whiteskirt (AAAAGGHHH)...some neon tetras, a gourami and some platies....she didn't even know that the fish were called till I told her...

AND THEN...she went away for the weekend...didn't arrange for people to look after the fish...she came back to find there was no tetras, a platy had half a tail and the angel was swimming on its side (and died shortly after)...all she said was "thats OK...those fish were boring, I am gonna get cichlids now"

Imagine my reaction to that!! That was 2 months ago and I havent spoken to her since....

Hey there cutecotton. Can you get a picy of her tank. Maybe some members here can help u id them. Then if you go fish shopping with her you will be armed with knowledge. Maybe she will think its neat how you know so much about fish, and will want to have knowledge too. I bet you could even talk her into trading the incompatible fish she has for better fish for her. My lfs will trade fish for store credit if they dont have anything I want that day.
