Rob's 3X2X2

My thoughts:

DSB's in the sump itself are a royal PITA. Eventually you'll need to clean/service it, and siphoning sand out of a sump tank that sits on the bottom is nearly impossible ;). best to have a remote deep sand bed in a 5g bucket instead :)

why would i need to clean/service the DSB?

surely a good sand bed is a self maintaining area, as long as it has a good selection of beasties in it, and has good flow and is fed enough?

I think he may meant at some point you will need to clean the sump, the DSB being there will be a pain. Might be the way I interpreted it though.

How is it going, any pics due soon??

Not Long now Rob

Boy are we all going to be busy this weekend

Tell me about it!
can't stop dreaming about all the DIY i now need to do!

think i've managed to source nearly everything i need now.
just got to get a shelf today and some washers for suspending the halide.
Also need to get some ball valves and some more piping but can't do that till i get the tank and see how everything fits together.

might get started on staining the halide supports tonight.
Just too damn excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

TigerIssey: never fear i'll be uploading loads of pics over the weekend as the build starts to happen.

Trod: you're gonna love your prezzie, and what you're planning to do with it will look amazing

A lot of the literature on DSB's rob indicates that over a long enough timescale (1 year plus) the sand bed can become ineffective, or worse yet septic. The mechanism/reason for this is unknown but the observation is common (some think it's detritus buildup, though that's never been proven). Usually those who employ a DSB that has out-lived its usefullness say it needs to be replaced and/or cleaned and washed thoroughly in tapwater if you want to use it again. This is why "old salties" who love DSBs use them in 5g buckets :)

Any sign of the tank yet :shifty:

nope, i think its due just after 12. just clearing a space for it now.
have just prewarned the LFS that i'm gonna need a load of RO this afternoon!
Rob
