quick update: managed to pick up 24kg of live rock yesterday for £100.
Some guy was having a thin out of his 7ft system so had this going spare.

am curing it now in the vat i'd got. quite a few dead shrimps are coming out.
plan is to keep it in the vat for around 4 weeks, with occasional water changes (mainly to suck out the dead crap that comes out of the rocks!)

sounds good, was it out of the water long then?

yeah i think it was out for a while.
still wet but not circulated. same sort of condition as when you buy it online really.

has got loads of evidence of life on it, so hopefully some will have survived!

was hoping to get some that was still sat in someones tank, but this came up at the right price and distance from my house so went for it.
hope i don't live to regret it!

even if most of the life has died off, it should seed very quickly from the live rock i've currently got in the nano , as that is literally crawling with life!

Rob

just a quick update, the rock is curing nicely, loads od crap coming off of it, including two massive worms
they were not bristle worms, sort of brown in colour with definite segments along their length.

how long should the curing process take and should i be doing water changes in the vat?
got temp set at 25-26 and the vat has two circulation pumps in it.

i will be very interested to hear what you have to say about the vortech, one of those is quite high up on my upgrade list.

Looks like a good start too :good:

Got the call last night to say that they can deliver the tank on friday. YIPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! :hyper:

the sample of the cabinet came at the weekend so am off to homebase today to get some wood and hopefully some stain to match them up.

smell has completely gone from the live rock in the vat and have added my external from the nano, which is full of mature live rock and has been operating as a 'cryptic' zone.
couldn't resist having a look inside, and its crammed full of sponges! :good:

am doing water changes on the nano, and taking the 'dirty' water and putting it into the vat. this should speed up the seeding of bacteria to the new live rock. :good:

also managed to get a very good condition Deltec MCE 600 skimmer from another forum last night for just £95!
wasn't intending to get a skimmer for this system, but this wasn't selling quickly and i couldn't resist haggling a good price :good:

all seems to be coming together now, just can't wait to start putting it all together.

p.s. have also been thinking about sump setups.
main sump i'm getting with the tank is gonna be a DSB, and have the heater and skimmer and return pump in it.
BUT i also want a low flow and lit area for an ecosystem area.
Think what i'm gonna try is having a stand over the top of the main sump and sit on that plastic tray. this will then have a thin layer of miracle mud and the algae in it. I can then attach a light to the top of the inside of the cabinet to light it.
Am gonna have a branch off of the main pipe from the tank with a tap to control the flow into the tray. At the other end of the tray i'll drill a hole near the top, which will then flow down into the main sump (return pump area).

all a bit complicated but will try to create a diagram to show what i mean.

Cheers,

Rob

I was gonna buy that you Mangey Dog
Just Kiddin Mate
What an absolute bargain, I recommended it to a fellow reefer on here when it was full price.
You got an absolute gift there mate. Good luck with it.
You seem to be progressing nicely, also interested in the MP40, give us a bit of a review when you get it installed.
Don't forget we need pics from when when the van arrives. :good:

saw the price and thought 'its gotta be worth a go!'
he he.

will have the camera on standby.
just finishing off a rough diagram of teh proposed setup. all comments welcome.

You have been busy,
You'll have to regulate the flow (ball valves) to the miracle mud section some way would you not
also need to have the LR lighted
not criticisms just observations I might add.

yeah there'll be ball valves on the input to the upper sump, to maintain a low flow into that area. still want strong flow for the DSB sump.
the live rock under the filter floss will become a small cryptic zone for sponges and the like. I've got one in an external at the moment thats going really well, so will just transfer that rock into teh new area in the sump.
The live rock on top of the sand is purely to give the larger types of animals a slightly larger substrate to move through on top of the DSB. Have read about doing it from:
http://www.reef-eden.net/DSBs.htm

cheers for the comments.

p.s. Big C i'm loving your signature!

Steven Garrett (Reef Eden) is a God. Many an idea has sprung from his electronic literature.
Yeah the sig may become part of a commercial venture I'm looking into.
