Reesy's 20 Gallon Reef Adventure

New update.

Algea is disappearing quicker than Barry Scott's Cilit Bang can make stains go away!

Rocks are completely clean now, however the glass is still rather mucky.

If I use and algea scraper to get it all off the glass should i leave it in for the CUC to munch on or could that cause the algea to come back?

Going to leave it till the weekend and let the snails continue to munch on it. Then on the weekend blitz the glass and the back wall and get it look beautiful again :). Will update with pictures then!

Reesy

Thats really good news - just let your cuc eat the stuff you clean off the tank - any big bits can come out though

Update on the ole algea situation.

Team Snail + Hermits have completely wiped clean the rock and the sand, They are doing a good job of the glass now aswell.

On a count down timer to when I can purchase my next fish or coral?!?!

13 days till payday!!

Good news!

Scraped the remaining algea off the glass on sunday (Not alot left to be fair to the turbos) and scooped it all out. The glass is now spotless inside and out :good:

Rock is nice and clean aswell, happy with my turbos although one has passed away....a hermit got him :'( I later on then saw the shrimp having a good nibble.

Bonnie and Clyde are as active as ever, bouncing around the tank like kids on a sugar rush lol.

I'm not sure what i'll be getting yet seffie, going through legal action against my old boss so depending on the payout I might get more lol.

What do you think I should get next?

I'm tempted to get a fish for the sand bed, like a goby or blenny, or something to sift the sand?

On the other hand I would also like a coral of some sort?

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Reesy

Hey all,

So its pay day which means that tomorrow I will be going to the LFS to buy my next purchase.

Checked the tank last night and the stats are on target.

My only problem is I cant decide between a coral or a new fish?

Can anyone suggest a coral or a fish that would be suitable for my tank?

Im thinking of getting something to sift the sand yet i want abit of coral in there.

Anything?

Reesy

You can have both Reecy :good:

Well my pink watchman goby stirs the sand, although he doesn't really sift the sand. Most soft corals are a good starting point, maybe a clove polyp or organ pipe - they add both colour and movement

Enjoy

Hi all,

I have bought a new member for the tank.

Bought a Pink Spotted Goby :)

He only cost £17 so was abit of a bargain i think. Pics aswell!

And the must FTS.

When I bought him he was seemed to be very stressed as he was whizzing around the bag like a mental patient. Aclimitised him for 4 hours and let him into the tank, he went straight into hiding under one of the rocks.

Today I turned the tank lights on and he slowly came out into the light. Going to leave him to it tonight and then do another water change tomorrow now that he is in.

Any comments welcome.....and I need help with a name :)

Cheers,

Reesy

I have one too, cute little guys - he will start to come out and sit on the sand, but will always come out at 'food' time

Don't forget to add him to the Fish of the thread week please (gobies)

Mmmm a name, how about Humphrey, goodness only knows why!

Hmmm, not to sure about that name lol.

I've been trying to read up on them as much as I could before purchase but these guys do sift the sand right?

Since you've got one ur the best person to ask?

No they don't sift sand but they move about in such a way that the substrate gets moved around a lot :good:

Right ok, hmmmm #41####...kinda wanted a sand sifter :/

Well i guess I cant really get another bottom feeding fish in the tank size that I have as it could cause fights with the goby right?

I currently have 30 - 40 Kribensis babies in a tank in my room, However last time I sold the fry i got £60 so Im hoping to raise the fry to a bigger size so that I can get more for them and then get a couple of corals for the tank, that way the tank will be almost be three months mature.

Lets see how it goes.

P.S thanks for being so commited Seffie your the only one that ever seems to comment me lol.

Update

Haven't updated for a while so here is goes.

The Goby is settling in well and come out of his cave and watches me do whatever I'm doing. The clowns are as always full of life and exploring everything in the tank.

I'm starting to have another problem with diatomic algea and my snails are dying. My snails are getting to the top of the glass then falling and landing upright and my shrimp is getting to them before I can so I only have 2 left at the moment.

Im due to do a large waterchange on the weekend to combat anything in the water that could be helping the algea grow. Would it be a good idea to take the rock out and wash all the algea off it?

Regards,

Reesy

you wanna combet the cause of the algae really.
are you running any phosphate remover (i.e rowaphos/ultiphos)?
what are your phosphate and nitrate levels?
phosphate needs to be 0 and nitrate as close to 0 as you can get it.

If your parameters are good then how long are your lights on for?
if needs be cut back the light duration to around 8 hours.

if this is all good anyway, then maybe you need some more CUC. hermits and snails will help with algae, or if its real bad then try hiring a Sea Hare from another reefer or LFS. That should make short work of your algae issues, but if they run out of food they can die and heavily pollute your tank.

we noticed :p

hold on before you start blaming your water for the snails - are they Astreas? you know they can't right themselves if they fall off a rock etc and need to be turbed over by you

and my shrimp is getting to them before I can so I only have 2 left at the moment.

Try a different sort of snail

Are you running a phosphate remover - essential piece of kit i'm afraid

No, no, no  what are your stats, lets check them first then if ok lets think about a different member of the cuc
