Which tank mates are best for a red tailed shark?

How big is the tank and what is the general hardness (GH) and pH?

Red tail sharks are normally fine with big barbs, big tetras, medium sized peaceful cichlids, big species of rainbowfish and most catfish. However, they will have a go at other types of algae eating fishes and can sometimes go after small fish.

They need a reasonable size tank (3 foot long or more) and tolerate a range of water conditions. Depending on what your water chemistry is will determine what other fishes can go in the tank.

Male Bettas are solitary fish and best kept that way, Shrimp snails and bottom dwelling fish like Kuhli loaches can work.

In a big tank (3ft+) with lots of plants you can keep most small tetras that aren't fin nippers, small barbs that aren't fin nippers, small peaceful cichlids, any small catfish.

In a small tank (2ft or less), keep the Betta on his own or with some small catfish, snails or shrimp.

Avoid black widow/ skirt tetras, serape tetras, Buenos Aires tetras, blind cave tetras, tiger barbs and big species of barb and labyrinths (gouramis and other types of Betta).

Red Tail Shark is among the worst community tank members out there,

Best kept with a tank full of african cichlids......and even then, if your going to have one.....ONLY HAVE ONE!
