You don't have to use wood - you can also try PVC pipes or terracota pots as well...

well i have two big pirate ship halves will that do good I will probaly end up gettin pvc pipin.
As long as they are somewhat of a cave shape, and the male can find it, it will probably work... The cave should not be too large though - initially I had a tera cota pot, with the opening size of around 3 inches, partially submerged into the substrate. He was absolutely not interested in that "cave".

Sorry for butting in here but....

I have given my male two lengths of pvc piping which are 50mm inside diameter and about 6" long. Both are open ended at the mo but i can block one end with a piece of slate if neccesary. Do they need the end blocked to make it a cave rather than a tube?? My male has decided at the moment to make a dent in the gravel alongside the tube but it doesnt seem to me to be a very good place and I do want to encourage them to spawn so I want him to adopt a proper cave, you know, a place suitable to raise a family :D

I believe the cave should be blocked at one end...

we had open pipes in our tank and lost a spawn because the fry got 'blown' out by the male fanning.

we have sealed up one end of both the tubes and this time we have wigglers in the tube (although quite a few have got out and been eaten :(

So I say block one end.

There you go... ;)

Would it be a good idea to block using some material that will still let some water go through? I'd imagine having some water current pass through would be better than none!

deffinatly - it will help reduce the chance of fungus.

I've blocked ours with gravel and aquarium silicone (yes it was messy!)

I'm thinking about it...

the thing is.. with out the loaches, the snails run ammok. and without the tetras, it'll look empty.

But it still might happen.

that is the exact same problem i got!!!! snails everywhere after i took out the loaches!.
Yeah my breeding tank bores me to death, but look on the bright side :D

I have seen 22 fry in the breeding tank, and have 18 fry in the fry tank.
I now have more eggs!!!!! this is getting to much for me
