I posted frequently about a month ago about Smudge my red wagtail platy, who had a difficult pregnancy, possibly parasites, and contracted columnaris.

To cut a long story short I set up a hospital tank very hastily and transferred her. When I had her in her new tank and was able to see her more clearly I realised that her fins were not just clamped with distress but actually eaten away with finrot. So I treated first with Interpet Anti-bacterial and the with Interpet Anti-finrot. She was beginning to look better and the last two days had actually been cruising the tank looking around rather than clinging miserably in a corner. This morning I found her dead in a plant.

She really was a fighter but it must have got too much in the end. Maybe she even starved to death as her sore mouth seemed to make it very difficult for her to eat in the end. She had a lovely personality. I was fonder of her than I've ever been of a fish before, we all were.

It seems particularly hard as my daughter is confined to her bed at the moment because of her joint disorder and our coping ability is low. I feel a bit of a failure all round, as a mother and petkeeper: if I can't keep my fish alive or my child walking....

Also, the male platy in the other tank also seems to have a touch of finrot though it's hard to tell as he keeps hiding. Strange, they haven't been in contact for 4 months, and the tank stats are fine (0 ammonia and nitrites) in his tank. So this afternoon I'll be stripping Smudge's tank down for the next patient. Not particularly a cheering thought.

The one comforting thing is that Smudge did leave a legacy- we have 21 young platys happily swimming around in the livebearer tank and they look in fine shape.

Sorry folks, just needed a shoulder to cry on.

:rip: Sorry to hear about Smudge. Do not go beating yourself up. You did more for Smudge the most people would. With all the things she was going through most people would have shown her to the the swirling cemetary. You gave her every chance to make it so be proud of yourself for the work you did.

Thanks guys. Been looking at her babies feeding in the other tank this evening, which makes me feel better. They look so happy and active and sociable, just like their mum. I discovered one I never knew I had, too, thought we had six 2-months-old- and there are seven.

:flowers: hope these flowers cheer you up. sorry to hear about smudge hope things get better soon

:rip:

So sorry to hear about Smudge, i know how attached you can get to fish, ive done the same with mine, at least you still have her little ones to keep her memory alive. Please don't be down on yourself from what i have read in your postings you would of done anything for her or any of your pets, she couldn't of asked for more you did you best.

If you need support and things are getting tough just post or PM, i know what it is like to have somebody in the family ill, ive seen the look on my mum's face when she cant do anything to help me when i am really ill, its not her fault the same as its not yours, dont beat yourself up about that either, you love your daughter and would do anything for her that is easy to see.

Hope things get easier for you, take care.

Claire

Thank you for your support. Good to know that there are people who understand. Most people can't understand how you can make a fuss about a fish.

It really isn't a good fish week this. This evening I discovered that my male platy had fungus on his face; I thought he'd been acting strangely. So I decided to isolate him. I managed to scoop him up ever so gently with a jug, yet halfway up the stairs he went into shock and keeled over, I thought he was dead. He has moved since put in the tank, so I've covered it up and left him- but I'm not looking forward to checking on him tomorrow.

Sorry R.I.P.

Wow, not sure how I missed this one.

So sorry to hear about Smudge. :( I know you really loved her, and it was so great to hear of her sucesses. I'm sure she had a wonderful life with you.

:rip: Smudge. Enjoy Fishy Heaven.

Thank you both. Mickey the male platy was dead this morning. I think the shock of being transferred killed him. Yet I did it ever so gently. Not a good fishy week. That's the last of my bought platys gone. I hope the homegrown generation will prove stronger.

Awwww, DwarfGourami...what a bad week for you! (Hugs DwarfGourami) :)

I'm sure the homebred ones will be stronger, they usually are. :D *crosses fingers for homebreds*

Got home myself yesterday to find that my female sunburst platy was looking very very poorly and within a couple of hours she was gone as well :rip: , im lucky like you though i have one of her young in my main tank who is growing up fast.

Hope you have had a better day today :)

I lost one of my Juvie Swords in the growout on Sunday. It looked like the intestines were torn out or that a long stringy poo had gotten snagged near the top of the filter, The belly looked torn and it was not white and stringy but a red-orange string that had trapped it. I have not lost a fish in the growout in many months and the only ones I have lost in there were tiny ones that got trapped in the filter. I only had 15 left in that tank and it was the largest of those remaining. Even though it was destined to be sold or traded I was upset not for the loss of a sale but for the loss of a life under my care. Anyway dwarfgourami I hope that the coming weeks bless you with a better fortune and we are here to help as best we can. :)
