Question About Naming Shops.

I have just had a post removed which was basically to amass a list of aquatic stores in areas to maybe enlighten people on ones they didn't know about or missed - i put a sentance in there saying maybe users could put what they liked or disliked about a store eg i liked the fish tank built in the wall

I'm still in discussion with the mod about this post but think its unfair to remove it completely when i'd spent a good few minutes typing it out

Fair enough you need to be diplomatic and i am really gratefull that this forum is a pleasent and freindly place so the mods are obviously doing something right and probably in their own spare time too but surely you can give an opinion on what you personally liked or disliked about a store

The internet gave people freedom of speech and opinion uncensored by press /propaganda etc and if i can't say what i liked or disliked about a product or store based on my experience then maybe i should look for another forum

for removing a post which had a mere mention of asking users to maybe say what you like or dislike about a store seems a bazooka to kill a fly aproach especially when there wan't one negative remark on there.

...gets off soap box and goes to feed fish

These threads generally end up with people getting way to out of hand and are best left alone. The review section top of home page is for single reviews of certain shops, equipment etc, that way we can check them over, make sure everything is fine and leave it there for people too see for themselves.

what utter rubbish - my post was to inform people of shops in the area to make people aware of them, as i'm still finding ones i didn't know about, and also to tell people what sort of stuff they have there eg massive collection of fish or loads of equipment or a lovely big display tank in the wall - not any of my post was negative or deflamotory but now it seems mods have a forsight to remove posts on which somebody may post something negative, wasn't there a film where criminals were arrested before they commited crime - didn't end very well in the end think it backfired....

If we can't share our info and tell others about our experiences and what aquatics stores there are around whats the point of a forum, i've been a member since 2004 and if my post is not allowed i'm looking for another forum which allows members to speak fairly but freely

I am really suprised at the mod response on this one and i don't like the way it's going

you post my original and show me where it breaks any of your forum rules and what justification you have for removing it

im really angry about this

It seems to me that this site runs thanks to the many volunteers acting as mods. I know there was a thread about Pets@home on the PFK board which had to be deleted due to the content, which seemed to be overwhelmingly negative but there were worries over the legal issues of this.

I didn't see fish+peace's deleted post but Ps3Stevo's response seems perfectly acceptable to me, although perhaps if the thread was locked and an explanation was put on it this might have prevented fish=peace from getting upset/irate.

Ultimately the mods have final say on what is/isn't allowed so you either respect that or leave..

Legal issues with people slating stores they don't like.

Answered in one sentence, it's just to stop what has happened previously starting again, the reason there is no thread regarding this is because all have been removed in the past. Like I said, use the reviews section when its open to members, it does the same thing, shows people what's where and how good it is.

You wont find a forum willing to let people leave negative feedback about shops. I know you said positives but you also said what you don't like, believe me it will all end in someone getting the hump and slating a shop somewhere down the line.

As mentioned previously in this thread the review section, once it comes online, will allow people to rate products in a quantifiable way. By setting specific criteria upon which a product is based we remove "pure" opinion. Such rating systems exist all over and are quite successful.

Due to other issues with the forum the review section has taken a back seat but I will get it going.

As mentioned the mod team do the forum as a side thing. I have a full time job, a family, and I'm a full time student getting a masters as well as all the other things I have to do. I spend a lot of time on the forum but can only be here so much.

By not having threads about particular stores we reduce the workload on mods and preempt any problems such threads might cause.

Because we know that such reviews are important to the hobby we are creating the review section.

There are plenty of other forums that allow this kind of stuff... I would write the name of one but it would probably be automatically changed to the name of this forum.

Well that's the problem for those forums when they have legal battles on their hands.

I think perhaps you did not understand my post minnnt. Once the review section is up it will be allowed here. We are just going about it in a responsible way based on the hard lessons other forums have had to learn in court. No thanks! But since we know it's important to members and the hobby in general we found a way...the review program.

I understood it fully, thanks.

How come you feel the need to replace certain forum names with the name of this forum?

Just wondering.

Because it is against forum rules to promote other forums.

Steve is right.

It's actually a very common practice across forums to limit references to other forums. Some places like Reef Central are so strict about it that members get banned quickly, others like TFF's sister forum The Reef Tank allow it as long as the reference is informative and not designed to promote the other forum.

I see it as a common sense practice myself. It's like someone going into a fish and chips place and telling all the customers about the other fish and chips place down the street. That person would get kicked out of there quickly!

Nothing to do with being insecure about tff then?

I see you just mentioned another forum without it getting replaced by fishforums. Unlike if I wrote aqcenter. Just sayin...

Oh look... it got replaced...

As you will see in the above post, I never promoted another forum but it was still replaced. No different to tcamos mentioning Reef Central or the Reef Tank...

Still seems like you aren't quite getting the point. Let me repeat the example from above.

All we have to do is use a little common sense to understand rules like these.

That said...this has nothing to do with the topic at hand which is posting about shops on the forum and risking legal action against the forum as a result.

But if what you are saying is the real reason, then why aren't ALL sites replaced with fishforums.net? If you don't want to go off topic in this thread then I can start a new one? Would that be better?
