I'm torn between the two- they both have beautiful coloration. The good thing is you can have some of both!

That's not true if you breed a red platy your fry won't all be red. If you breed it with another strain of platy like I did you'll get different ones. I invented dark orange platys with blobs on their tails! Lol.
You get better colors crossing platys with swordtails.

Oooooooh those are pretty DM. Mine could be hybrids I don't think they're old enough to tell though. I kinda want swords  but I don't want a full community setup  not sure if I could get them or not but may need to decrease something else oh well don't wanna hijack but if anyone wants to help you could post once or twice here I bet or pm me :)

Come on platies only 3 more!!!! Would the endler be it's own category??

Platies for me. I didn't like them t first but I had no success with guppies I found them to be so fragile, dying one after the other within hours of adding to the tank when everything else was fine I actually despise them now for the hassle they gave me! Might just be me and my soft water.
Platies are still colourful-very hardy (I had that nitrite spike for about 2 weeks and they all came out the other end of it well and I even have a single baby fry :hyper: )
The females are as colourful as the males, very active and can stand their ground when the males get too much. I love my platies and swordtails. They are so much fun to watch esp playing in the bubbles!

8 guppies and 12platys oh dear...

i really cant believe this :S just soo weird ha

thanks for everyones input and comments im enjoying this topic reading all the posts :)

haha well platies are winning but its not over yet.... !

thanks for the correction :grr:

neither, there both boring. and gupps die way too often.

Boring compared to which type of fish and in what meaning?
There is a tendency in fish keeping to think that just because a fish is cheap and common, it is boring. It just seems that people like to parade with rare type of fish like it is something very interesting although most of the time all those "rare" ones barely move, hide most of the time and all they do is poop or attack other fish.
I am probably replying because I have guppies and platies myself, but tell me what is the boring part about them?

I cannot answer for deftuch but I have the same feelings, boring is not the correct word (I actually hate the word and don't use it) that I would use, but I've been there and done that, as in all things in life I like a challenge and have moved onto the more rare fish which you talk of possibly.
Its down to personal preference really, I know someone whose kept mollies for 30+ years, just mollies and nothing else. That's not to say there isn't always going to be a place in my heart for livebearers as they're what got me hooked initially and will always look at them in tanks in any LFS I visit where others would just walk past. Guppies I've never been able to keep longer than two weeks, they die on me, have tried for a few years now but I decided not to bother trying again after buying 10+ over various weeks.
