Planned Fry Journal Just For Fun :)

I'm finding it quite hard to tell when some of my fish have dropped fry.  I was getting so confused I made a diary yesterday so I can estimate when each of my four pregnant females are due.  Big momma Poppy is like clockwork, she had her fourth drop yesterday and regularly drops at this time of the month.  The others are a bit harder to predict.  Spicy is the worst, I can't tell how pregnant she is at all and must have completely missed her last batch.

It is hard with platies. I am glad it's not just me. Do yours drop every 4 or 5 weeks? It's been 5 weeks since her last drop after food she's huge. I find she doesn't get as skinny as the guppies do when she drops this is why I can't tell. I find platies to be quite round anyway. Arrgghhh it's so frustrating. At least if she did drop fry I won't see them until about 3-4 weeks time.

I find it really hard to tell these days with my guppies and mollies. Shape and activity does not apply with them it seems. I too just have to bide my time or take a chance. For example, found a surprise mollie fry in the tank last night. Have yet to see it this morning and so far no others! Mysteries! lol

Oh really? I find my guppy goes square then it's only days. The platy is just always huge lol. Congrats on the molly fry!

I just seen a pic of black and white swordtails. Since swordtails and platies breed quite frequently, I have decided to get a swordtail for the white platy since she doesn't have a male. Should produce some interesting results.

They need a lot of space Ny, and the males are aggressive to each other.
I wouldn't keep them in anything less than a 3footer.

I've had them before Pete and I did find them to be quite aggressive.  I also found that the female platies preferred them. Maybe just look for a nice male platy. I can't even find any high fins. The last time I had a high fin was when I first started keeping platies over a year ago! Not seen them in since.

Yeh,I thought you had them before, they just seem to be at their best with a bit more space.

Gotta love the high fins...hope you find some. I remember the ones you used to have and I went blim blim for them !!!

They were beautiful, striking contrasting colours. I got them from dobbies garden world and I have never seem them since :( I don't want to discriminate against platies but there are always the same colours. Red and yellow. My white girl may just be another platy but to me she's special as I have never seen another white one before so I want to get her a male who is also "different" so they keep the white gene and possibly the blue eyes. I was thinking about a blue male.
So many things to think about, I know i'm being fussy but the goal of solid white with blue eyes wont happen unless I get a white male like the one she had. I wish she would also hurry up and drop these fry so I can just select some of them!

So I have tidied the tank up a bit. The wisteria was growing out of control but that's ok I just cut the excess and put them into the fry tank. I can see a mini jungle happening in it lol. I will put pics up tomorrow to let the water settle.

Could any of your lfs order fish for you ? I often see 'Moonbeam Platties' in mine, They're pearly blue and white and have an iridescent glow about them.
I think you would want if you saw them.

I haven't heard of them. I know dobbies ordered discus in for someone, I will ask next time I am there. I used to only live 5 minutes away. Now I am in the next town but still only 15 minutes along the motorway. Maybe phone them instead. I like dobbies, they have such clean tanks and a much better selection.

No harm in asking... they can only say no lol.

Even if they have to order them in quantity Platties are one of the top selling fish so if their suppliers have them I'm sure they would get some in.

Definitely. I shall phone them tomorrow and find out. I will try and dig out some pics too, my fave was a silver male with black fins. Lets see if I still have pics!

I still have the pics!

Here are the high fins I used to have.
