Haha that's exactly it. I had 2 male swordtails and about 3 or 4 female platies. One male had a sword the other didn't, The female all hung around the male with the sword. The other male tried his hardest but they would not let him mate with them. The poor thing I felt so bad for him!

Little phoenix was out in the open for most of the day today! He is getting big. He is already about half a cm long! I haven't had a platy baby in so long, well over a year so it's exciting watching his progress!

I find them to be quite slow. I didn't know I had fry when I first had platies and a baby emerged. I though they had all been eaten. I estimated him to be about 3 weeks old. Lengthwise he was shorter than a guppy fry at that age but bodywise a lot chunkier. I have the temp high in the baby tank around 28 because I find the guppies grow better and faster but the platy is a bit slower. That's ok, he has a 30L to himself so he can take as long as he likes! :D

I agree with Ny they are quite slow but it is very gratifying to watch them mature.
They are temperate so the temperature can be quite a bit lower than for the guppies. My platy tank runs at 24-25°C.

My platy is in my community tank, the temp is 26-27. She is doing great. But now...PICS!

OH MY GOODNESS LOADSA FRIES! Look how big they are now!

Just to give you an idea of size, look at them compared to one of the male cherry barbs! My black male guppy is small anyway.

Just as a side track. I thought I would put a pic of my special little female cherry barb. The tigers nipped her and now she only has 1 tail fin (the top half remains) she can still swim and is doing great

I am so glad I can take pics with my camera now! The majority of them were bunched at the top of the tank so I took the opportunity!

Thanks! They are growing so quickly, it will be sad to see them go :(

Those fry are big!  When do you think they'll start colouring?
I hope they look like your black male - he's a beauty.

Couldn't help but think "would you like fries with your fish?"  Lol poor cliche I know!

These fry were from females who were already pregnant. They were both gold but both died after giving birth so it's a lucky dip to see what the fry turn out like!
I was going to put-want fries with that? lmao that's poor!

But it is funny, Daize! lol
it will never get old!

So you are not going to believe it. I was feeding oddball, my siamese fighter in the 64L tank when there it was, sitting on a leaf.

Another fry! Ignore the horrible, fluffy leaf, I don't know what's going on with my amazon swords.

I don't fancy his chances much in the tank with oddball. I can't catch him though and me chasing him was sending oddball into a frenzy and we had some near misses. I will leave him be until I come up with a plan. Lets face it, I took the plants out, moved the wood around and the pebbles and there were guppies and a platy in there, and STILL didn't find the 2 fry that I have now. He might just be ok!

Good luck to him!  Some fry just seem to be natural born survivors.

They are masters of hiding and surviving on micro-organisms on plants - so it may well be ok with Oddball who will probably be much slower than the fry. They can be remarkably quick when their life is at stake!
