I was looking on the internet for info about my tank (it's a 5 gallon, advertised as a goldfish tankj. Come on.), and I cam eacross this website-
http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F0...2/Itemdy00.aspx
This is a 2 gallon plastic bowl. It says it will make a happy home for a goldfish.
Also on the website-

This is basically a betta in a vase with modified instructions(to clean and fees the betta instead of not ever).
Look on the website- see the tiny tanks they sell. Does anyone else know any websites or shops (big shops preferably) that sell tiny bowls reccomended for goldfish?

Yeah, all of the Pet Stores around me sell that stuff. Either the 1-5 gallon tank showing some little kid staring, contently at their setup version of the tank, which usually holds multiple fish. What's more is some of these tanks will actually say "Goldfish kit" on it and there is *no way* goldfish should ever be kept in those small containers. Ever. It's cruel, imo.

Yes. I sent an email to the makers of the tank I've got. Here's the reply-
Thank you for your recent email, the goldfish on the boxes are fancy goldfish and not the common species of goldfish that you are referring to. Fancy goldfish can grow up to 9cm long but this can take years and are more suited to aquariums than ponds as they are not as tolerant as common goldfish to extreme low water temperatures. We also ensure that our aquarium kits come with adequate filtration to help prevent the build of of toxins. Unfortunately many people still keep goldfish in just glass bowls without adequate filtration.

Hmm.. The tank IMO is still to small for even one fancy goldfish... its 5 gallons, give or take a little bit. :p Damn, I said thet earlier.

OH MY GOD! *passes out*

Wow, these people must not have seen a real adult size fancy goldfish. Everyone I've ever seen has been too plump and long to fit, comfortably, in a small tank.

Yes, even at the pet shop I bought the tank at it said fancy goldfish grow up to 26 ish cm. Can't remember exactly.

My pet store sells "goldfish bowls" but we always tell people that they aren't a realistic home for goldfish. Bowls only work for bettas and even then its not a "maintenence free" pet! Some people still buy them because they just don't care. *sigh*

Good for you! :) It's always nice to hear of a Pet Store that gives out good advice. :)

I'm going to write a nice little e-mail to those people...

lol me too! I've sent an email to the link I listed and to the Hagen people, but next will come Pets At Home.... Moo ha ha ha....

:)fish:) Free the goldfish!

My friend works in a lfs and oftwen stops people buying these things(he waits till the manager goes out) He also hands out unofficial info on cycling. Unfortunatly his boss knows nothing about cycling or fish in general and only intrested in £££. Thank god my mate tries to stop the selling of these cells!

Don't trust that site anyway on the first link it says: this 1 1/2 gallon fish bowl and then contradicts itself by saying:

Size: 2 gallons

Stupid people.

Oh for Gods sake! I just went on the pets at home website, and it says This load of crap!

Housing
A single goldfish may be kept in an unfiltered bowl which will require a weekly 30% water change to keep the water fresh. Goldfish need oxygen in the water to breathe and this enters through the surface of the water. A goldfish bowl will only have enough surface area to provide oxygen for one fish. As a general rule you will need 4.5 litres of water for each small goldfish.

A tank with some filtration will enable you to keep the water quality better creating a healthier environment for your fish and allow you to keep several fish in a community

4.5 litres!?!?!?! Thats only about 2.5 is gallons. It makes me sick. Email complaint time!!!! And I urge you all to do the same!

our shop aren't ordering in any more bolws we're on the last few now, apparently we're only going to order in ones that come with filtration.

even though some of them are prett small and inhumane for much permanantly

I think it's ok to sell fish bowls provided they aren't advertised as ordinary tanks for communities or goldfish bowls. After all, you CAN keep a betta in an un-filtered bowl and some people use them as temporary homes for very young fry. However, I DON'T think anything under 2.5 gallons should be sold as a fish bowl in the first place.

I saw a fish bowl in the garden/pet center the other day, it was like a big wine glass must have been no more than 2 liters  , its sickening. When will the world wake up and give these creatures what the deserve for putting up with us humans for decades-SPACE AND KINDNESS.
