Operation Marine 2.........now 3

Sourced a second hand tank local to me to become my new sump. It's 100cmx35cmx45cm LDH so will just squeeze into te space inthe cabinet. It will first act as a temp holding tank for my stock and some of my rock for a week or so to allow me to drill the main tank and fit weir etc also modify the cabinet totake the sump.

After that's done the tank will be filled again but below the weir level to run as it is now and then I can get going on turning the second hand tank into a sump using some glass I have spare from an old glass vivarium.

Had a result with the sump tank I will be using, a 32" long tank would have been ideal but I would have had to have a separate top up tank in the cabinet the tank I will be using as my sump is 39" long so I plan to integrate a top up section in the last 7" this will give me a top up tank of roughly 20-25lts depending on how high I have the water level.

I am also going to make my own auto top up unit from component parts using a tried and tested method from another forum. This will save me in the region of £80, as a new unit from tunze etc would be £138.99.

Got a new nitrate kit to double check my nitrate reading.

Result was 50ppm just to put in to perspective I did a 50% dilution of tank water using old test kit and result came out at 160-200ppm!!

Had a bit of a result tonight at work. Mate of mine happened to wonder into my department and its the same mate who sold me a few marine bits last yr whey started up.

I asked him if he ever got round to smashing his old 4x2x2 and sump up and taking it to the tip his reply was very pleasant.....no it's still sat in my dining room why?

Can I have it I said, yeh when do ya want it!! My eyes lit up!

This will help me solve my no sump issue and also my where can the tank go issue, current rio 400 is too long for proposed only fish tank position in dining room so a 4footer is ideal and I lose no volume as it works out I actually gain volume :)

Just got to figure out what to do with a stand, do I go DIY or is it just as cheap to buy a new cabinet purpose made from a company. I still have to drill this 4ft tank as mate used an overflow box but I don't mind that bit.

I am ordering a metal frame stand tomorrow or Tuesday that I plan to temporarily clad with the old panels from my rio beech cabinet. I should have enough to cover what I need to as it's basically to keep the dogs, who live in the dining room, away from the sump equipment etc until I have the fund to clad it properly. Also means I can clad it whenever I need to to go along with the decor of the room, as it changes

Still to pick up the tank but mates not in a rush to have it removed so all is good. Just got to order plumbing stuff, drill bit and some glass for the weir.

On another note my nitrates are holding at 50ppm I did a water change today and just tested it and reads 50ppm on the money. Thinking of removing the purigen from my external though as i feel it's trapping detritus and not helping the issue.

Ordered metal frame this evening will be a few weeks until it arrives which is good as need to decide on weir placement drill tank and sort pipework......oh and get tank

Conducting an experiment. Another nitrate test showed 50ppm of nitrate.

Tank was running an external with purigen puches in for that test.

I have turned the external off and will test again before and after a water change to see what happened

Forgot to test nitrate before commenced water change, although it turned into a cyno/hair algae ridding effort swell as a water change. Scrubbed affected rock in water removed from tank with a toothbrush then re scaped swell a bit...not much but a bit

24hrs after I cleaned rock etc nitrate was still at 50ppm even with external turned off and therefore not purigen running on the system.

Got to get ,yself a job so I can get some more CUC as mine have all but gone now and I will need to. Sort the newe system out which will require money too

New stand is coming on Tuesday, got my hole cutters delivered today and when the stand is here i will go get the tank and drill it.

Got a quote for weir glass on the way and all i have to get is pipework.

Stand arrived just before 10am nice welds and it comes painted already too in a truck chassis paint which is resistant to salty water :)

Bulkheads and silicone also arrived shortly after so now i can get planning my weir and get some glass. Picki up tank on 6/7th movement as mate has to give it a clean out first he said lol
