Hi all this is my first post, everyone on here seems very helpfull so joined up, i have recently been very interested in fish keeping and want to do it as a hobby i recently purchased fluval spec 7.2 lt tank as my first small tank (eventually want a fluval studio 900 or something similar) i have used fluval stratrum as substrate and have been trying to cycle using fish food but very hard to judge and today went to homebase and found some ammonia so very happy about that, the tank has some anubias plants and bogwood in aswell and is looking messy from the fish food, i am wondering if i should do large water change 90% or so then start again using the ammonia ? also how much would you advise a couple drops or what not sure ?

amy help greatly appreciated

Thanks a lot Dean

7.2 litres? Far too small I'm afraid, as a starter tank I wouldn't go any smaller than 50 litres, preferably bigger. More water easier to maintain.

Also you won't be able to keep any fish in there :(

i know its small but looks great, i am saving for larger 200l or so, i have seen many people keep betters in them tanks or shrimp what do you think about what i posted earlier

You could do one Betta and a few shrimp or just shrimp, but if I were you I'd almost take it back. That's less than 2 US gallons.

I personally think that's too small, even for a betta. Shrimp only in something that size.

Yes, a 90 or 100% water change won't do any harm; you might want to rinse out the filter (in some of the old water) as well as fish food cycles do tend to dirty up the filter with 'crud; quite badly. According to the caculator on this site you need to add 0.29ml to give you 4ppm ammonia.

thanks a lot for fluttermouth that very helpfull, i will do large water change this morning then clean out filter media in the old water

how long after adding ammonia can i test the water ?

Give it 2 mins and should be alright, i have one of those specs also sitting on a shelf, rather pointless tanks for anything other than half a dozen shrimp. Hardly an introduction to fish keeping :) At least it gives you some idea how to cycle a filter before you crack on with something bigger. Keep an eye on eBay by the way, there are lots of deals to be had on there. For £60 you can pick up a nice Fluval Roma 90 litre which is an excellent size for a starter tank.

thats great thanks a lot mate will keep my eye out

Best of luck; and don't forget that you can always use a bit of the media to seed any new filters, once it's cycled, so you can shorten the cycle on your bigger tank when you get one by a long time :good:

I second the ebay thing. I have just picked up a 4 foot/95 US gallon tank for £72

I saw a 5 foot tank advertised for £80 with stand somewhere. I think it was a Facebook page lol.

There are so many bargains out there for tanks :)
