New To Fish Keeping, My Big Journal

I've been away for a couple of days, and the algae has grown a right lot. is this okay?

I'm just about to do water tests

I've just been looking at what I can stock my tank with, How many fish can I get per litre?
Also does that figue include inverbrate or not?
And which would be better to get first? fish or inveribrate?

Water Test, Day 12

Temp: 25.3
Ph: 8.2
NH3: 0.25
NO2: 0.05
Sal: 1.024
alK: 2.2

Water Test, Day 13

Temp: 26.9!!!
NH3: 0.22
NO2: 0.05
Sal: 1.025

I'm guessing the temperature change is due to it been a nice day to day. is there anyway I can reduce the temperature change, caused by the weather?

Air conditioning? :)

Seriously, temp fluctuations can be tricky. The ideal method would consist of temperature controlled fans in the hood and possible air conditioning if the weather really gets hot.

Water stats look fine,

But noted your salinity is creeping up, this could be caused by evaporation, especially in the hot weather, top the tank up with RO water, this will help keep it constant :good:

I know where you're coming from with tank temp mine have hit 30c  I have just bought wall fans to put over the tank, you might like to think of this as a less expensive idea

PS. just a thought but you might like to ask a mod to move your thread from the hardware section to the journel section

Yer i've had a fan o it and patio door open all of the time.

Day 23
Temp 29.4!!!!
Nitrite 0.05-0.1
Ammonia 0.25
SG 1.024-1.025

cyno is starting to go crazy so going to put in phos and carbon pad.
Green algae has been crazy for awhile
My results hardly ever seem to change, I want to get something in it! haha

Sharm ask Ski or BigC to move your tank journel to the nano section or the journel section - I suspect some people are missing out on your journey as it is in the hardware section :good:

Daft question of the day. What does your Nitrite kit read on newly mixed salt RO? IME, Nitrite kits are very prone to giving false highs if they are more than a few months old, or are a bit past the sell-by date ;)

All the best

I'll check that next time i make some up, should need topping up in a day or two. I looked at exp date, and it says its okay til 2011

Day 26
Temp 28
Nitrite 0.05
Ammonia 0.25
SG 1.025

Cycle so far

You're SG is wandering a lot. You loosing a lot to evaporation? What are you using to measure your SG?

All the best

no, i'm not losing that much from evaporation, I rarely have to top it up. I'm using a d&d refactometer. I'll post todays water test lter today, with the SG.

If you aren't loosing much water, and using a refractometer, something isn't right, it shouldn't be drifting that much. I doubt the amount of salt is changing, so it must be how you are measuring  When you take a sample and place it on the slide, make sure the upper cover glass is pressed with even pressure, and that no air gets under it before you take a reading. Also allow 30 seconds or so for the water sample to adjust to the refractometers temperature, allowing it to give an accurate reading. Finally, try to use the refractometer at teh same temperature each time. That should all give you more stable and reliable readings :good:

maybe i missed something in the thread earlier on but you're at day 26 of your cycle and you've still got ammonia? somethings not right if you ask me.

which test kit are you using?

That is a good point Anguilla, you'd expect the Ammonia to be gone by now with the size of spike you have seen...
