New Marine Tank

Well ok, I heard that they are fine in a longish tank with lots of rock mand hiding places.

Is it possibe if someone could check my method for starting up the tank because I am still pretty unsure...

1. Put in all hardware in my case - powerheads, heater, lights,
2. Add sunstrate to tank
3. Fill with tap water and dechlorinate it and add salt when in there? Very unsure and I don't really want to use RO water. But it might be possible for the first tank load, you can get it from the LFS can't you?4. When live rock arrives build up the aquascape.
5. Leave to mature and ride of NN&A.

Is this ok?

No point at all in filling with RO water first and then using tap from then on. As you change about half the water when the cycle is done. Go for RO water imo. Not worth risking anything in marines. If one thing goes wrong you can lose a fair bit of money. Why look back and think i wish i did this? Plus its pretty important if you plan on corals.

I wouldnt add the sand til the tank it up and running, salted and at temp. Then add the rocks so they sit on a nice firm glass/eggcreate base then the sand around it. Fish/inverts sometimes tunnel. If they tunnel under the rock it may collapse and kill somthing or crack the galss

When I add water to my FW fish. I just mix up dechlorinator with tap water, get it to the right temp and add it in. I would have thought that thios would have been possible to do with marines exept you add salt as well.

I also heard that using egg crates you create dead spots.

Its different with marines as the salt adds the elements to the water iirc. There are over 70 trace elements in sea water. Marine fish dont use anything from tap water whereas tropicals do. There are nitrates and phosphates in tap water which could cause an alage bloom and trace metals which can be harmful to inverts and corals. Some one will be able to word ot better than me im sure.

For egg crate stans you usually use little bits to stop the rcok coming in conctact with the glass. Not the whole bottom

Agree with Ben, since you're planning on high lights and corals in the tank, RO is what you need. Fish only with low lights, you can totally get away with tapwater, but as ben says, not worth risking the sensitive inhabitants to what may or may not be in your tapwater

Ok better go with RO.

If I get RO water will there be any need for me to buy marine salt?
Can you have lots of RO water stored away?
On average how much per gallon does RO water cost?
Is there a way I can get around not using RO water but I will still work.

Ok better go with RO.

If I get RO water will there be any need for me to buy marine salt? Yes or it will just be water. RO water is just really pure water, you still need to salt it.
Can you have lots of RO water stored away? It its air tight and kept moving yes
On average how much per gallon does RO water cost? My lfs charges £2.50 for 25L
Is there a way I can get around not using RO water but I will still work. - Not thats cost effective/ readily available

Tom

I suppose that its better to get it.

Sorry I didn't quite catch your answer to if you can store it anywhere, if so can it be kept out side?

Yes you still need to add salt to RO water.

I buy 25litres a week from my LFS for £3.75
Have you thought about installing your own RO unit have a look here http://www.ro-man.com/ quite a few people have used him.

Just a quick word of warning about emerald crabs, I have one and yes they are great algae cleaners BUT as they get bigger they also become great bulldozers too

Thanks Trod,

Which Ro unit would you reccomend for My 30 gallon tank?
I think I will stick wioth 1 emerald then and sucure my rock down.

Tom.

You would probably fill that tank in a day with a 50gpd unit. Get the ones with TDS. You always lose a bit because of temp and water pressure so a 30gpd one will only give a slow drip drip

I suppose that its better to get it.

it could be kep outside. But the container has to be air tight and you could do with adding an ait pump or someting so its not sat still. And ofc make sure it doesnt freeze
