Hi all

Well after letting my tank settle in for 2 weeks we went out and brought 8 fish last weekend from a local fish shop. Not sure what they are called but 7 are the neon type which are very small and we also brought one bottom feeder which the guy told us was ok as they are all the same size.

Been feeding them twice a day and having the tank light on in the daytime and then off at night.

Over the last 2 days i have found 2 neons floating in the tank dead and wanted to know what could couses this to happen.

Chris

The tank isn't cycled I suspect.... Do you know what a cycle is when used in fish keeping terms? the reason your fish died is the tank does not have enough bacteria in the filter to eat away ammonia and nitrite which is caused by fish waste which is poison to fish.

What would you suggest that we do.

Chris

Me and my partner are new to fish keeping so any help would be great. I will read the link which was posted here.

So what are we best to do now with the tank and fish

Chris

Probably go back to the fish store if they knew you were a newbie and knew the tank wasn't cycled they should probably give a refund for the dead fish however Im not sure...perhaps best to go return some of the fish and get a ammonia locker which sits in your tank and eats it up while that doesn't get rid of Nitrite ammonia is more harmful than nitrite so survival of your fish is more likely when no ammonia is in your tank.

Do you have a friend who owns a fish tank as they could get you some filter media which already has some bacteria in it to eat away the ammonia and nitrite alternatively you could do the long process of fishless cycling which is the safe way of cycling a tank by having No fish in the tank but with your tank full of water and a filter etc and you add ammonia each day to the tank to start the nitrite creation to eat the ammonia which in turn the filters bacteria will build up and eat away the nitrite however if you wish to do a fishless cycle some research will need to be done aswell as the purchase of a water test kit and some ammonia

We cannot carry out any of the below as the store does not take fish back back. We also do not know anyone with another tank.

Is there anything u can do when the fish as in the tank or does it need to be empty of fish.

Chris

I suggested a ammonia locker which as the name states locks ammonia and makes it ammonium which is harmless to fish you could also get a bottled bacteria such as stress zyme or safe start to carry the cycle forward quicker (although there is some conjecture on whether those products work)

you can do a fish cycle but its better not to there is a list on the beginners page of people who can donate media, there should be someone near you who can do this. If you speak to the shop and tell them they falsely sold you the fish they have to do something about it.

Would it be ok to use the Ammonia Locker and Bottled Bacteria at the same time.

Is there any brands to keep away from

Should i still feed the fish twice a day and also have the light on

Chris

When you talk about media i guest this is just some water out of someone else tank with the bactria in it

media is the stuff inside of filters (sponges etc) which the water goes through. It will be safe to use the bottled bacteria and ammonia lock...If someone could help with the activated carbon issue with filters as I do not know the effect of carbon on these products

I will pop down to the store on wed and get the 2 products.

You have lost me with the carbon issue. What is this LOL.

Our filters and sponges in the top of the pump are branded ones as the tank came as a whole set as it is a starter tank

Activated carbon or charcoal is in filters in the first few weeks to get rid of nasty chemicals that leak into the water however this in filters can totally bugger people up as it gets rid of medications aswell

So do you think i should just try and add the 2 products then and see how it go's

Should i also get a water test kit to

Chris
