its always helpful to have a test kit but its all about how much money you have

your welcome chrisb1357 just trying to help out a newbie, heaps on this site have done something like you have done it's just process of elimination and patience

chris if you tell me where you are I will search that list of filter media for you, it would help the tank cycle faster so you can get going quicker

We are in Leicestershire

Our filter media is like in a plastic thing at the top of the tank and is not a normal shape. I have a black sponge and then under that there is a black plastic like thing with loads od holes in and then inside the plastic thing with holes i can see some very fine white filter stuff. then the water passes 5 plastics balls

as well as the above there is a normal black sponge ontop of this and then after the sponges there are 4-5 balls before the water re enters the tank

Chris

Yeah I know the one, we avoided that tank as it didnt seem easy to find replacements but im sure its fine. you can add any media really as far as I know, also adding mature gravel will help as the bacteria also lives in the gravel.

Im just trying nitrasorb in my tempory betta tank, if it works ill let you know

Afternoon people,

Just been to the local supplies and got some API Ammonia Lock (Ammo Lock) and some API Stress Zyme.

The Ammo Lock says add 5ml per 38 Liters of water every 2 days. Well my tank is only about 22 Liters so how much do i add. Do i just add the 5ml or less

The Stress Zyme says add 10ml per 38 Liters for new aquariums on thr 7th or 14th day or 5ml per 38 Liters therafter or for exisiting auariums. Do you count my setup as new even if it has fish in it or an exisiting. Also how much of this should i use on a about 22 Liters tank.

Many Thanks
Chris

it'll be less than 5ml, work it out proportionally, you dose of the ammo lock is 3ml.

count yours as new, and use 6ml of the stress zyme

:)

Well 22L is roughly half of 38L so use roughly half of the recommended dosage.

when you work it out you need to use 1/2 ml respectivley for every 7.6l of water. 22 isn't roughly half of 28, it's 6 off, which is nearly as much as another ml out on your dosing. you should always be careful when dosing meds and work it out exactly. it's easy enough to do.

if you dose 5ml for every 38, then divide 38 by 5 and this is how many l for each ml. it's 7.6. then divide your tank size by 7.6 and it gives you exactly how many ml you need to use.

That's true but if you don't have a graduated cyclinder with 1ml increments it's pretty much all guessing anyway. ;)

API products only have 1ml, 5ml, and 10ml increments in the measuring cap. To get 3ml you have to measure out 1ml three times and the margin of error will be increased defeating the whole purpose of trying to be accurate in the first place.
