New Beginnings

looking great Lu!

get rid of those melted leaves asap though, they will be giving you small spikes.

Thanks Ian! Which melted leaves do you mean? From the aponogeton?

Thanks Stu! The Corymbosa is still small and hidden between the wood and the limnophila.

Ah, i see it.It's like playing an aquatic version of 'Where's Wally (Waldo) ?

Right! Looks like it won't be for long though, as I see lots of new leaves developing... :hyper:

I am getting brown/green algae and wondering what to do. Should I put in a SAE, carry out more water changes, change something on the lighting period or fertilisation? Current dosing is 2x a week 20 ml of API leafzone, lighting 8 hrs straight in the afternoon/evening. Waterchanges 1x week around 20%.

See the above, Biulu, IMO that's why you've got the algae. Give the tank a good clean & remove any dead leaves. When I start a tank, I'm usually doing water changes more often than once a week.

Ok, I will do so. However, not sure about where the melting leaves are....
Did I do well with the pellia? Or is it too thick?

Yesterday evening when I got into the appartment, I was struck with the tank from that angle, so I tried to take a few pictures of it. Earlier in the day I had done a waterchange and cleaned the glass to get rid of the diatoms.

Enjoy!

looking really nice Lu...some Otos would love it in there, with the diatoms. :good:

I have been on top of the water changes and hope I am getting the diatoms under control. The wood is slowly sinking; today I was able to remove the largest rock. The smaller rock that was on top of the left side piece of wood was moved to the right hand side. It is my impression that the longer piece of wood will no longer float, but the more square one isn't ready yet.

I was over run with diatoms as well, but I've been scrubbing them with a toothbrush and it isn't building on the glass anymore. I don't know how to remove it form the more delicate plants like water sprite and small leaved stems.

Glad yours are going too. Ugly brown gunk on everything is not fun to look at.

I also use a toothbrush but only for the rock. I use a cloth for the glass and my fingers for the plant leaves... :look:. Luckily the wood hasn't been affected.

I am not happy with the look of the java fern. Although I like the leafshape (it has 3 lobes!) I am looking more for a dense growth. This rhizome is like a long stem with individual leaves. I saw philippine fern on internet and that looks really nice; I might go for that and cover the central part of the wood with that.

Thats why I took out my java fern. It was too slow growing and spaced out. I massage my plants too. lol
