Name's Warren.-- Not actually from the U.K. but Canada, friend just pointed me in your direction as one of the better Betta forums

This isn't my first time keeping bettas, I've kept them before.... but this is the first time I've really considered breeding them

And my trial breeders are a couple of petshop bettas.

2 females - Ruby & Sapphire due to the coloration their fins possess
Ruby's fins are mainly dark red with an electric blue along the edges --- there is a hint a very small hint of brown at the base of her tail fin but mainly that tail fin is electric green and deep red - almost black
Sapphire's fins are more dark red with a distinctively bright blue dorsal fin ---- her fins are noticeably smaller than Ruby's particularly the dorsal as Ruby's dorsal is nearly twice the length of Sapphire's.

1 male - Rainbow
Rainbow is a pale bodied "red-washed" male with aquamarine at the base of his fins and a lighter red throughout. I picked him [after 1/2 hr of examining males] due to the fact that his tail is actually shortest amongst the male veiltail bettas and his dorsal is rather impressive when he was flaring in response to a couple of other males.
It also didn't help that he was most active, i.e. not lying on the bottom of the bowl he was in --- like most of the other males.

I also saw a really really beautiful all white no "red wash" -- probably pastel --- female at the petstore but unfortunately as I've read breeding pale females is harder [due to the lack of visible "bars"] I resigned to leave her there.

Got them yesterday, and started on a diet of freeze dried bloodworms and pellets ---- this okay???

Treating them with melafix - some tail damage

But otherwise, they seem fine.

Any advice on breeding petstore and/or bettas in general
Also, how can you tell an old betta from a younger one?

Hi, I'm in Canada as well :)

A good topic about breeding bettas is here. There's a lot of good info on that page

I think its a bad idea to breed VT's and i think you will find a few on here who agree. I only say this because there are so many VT's that need homes and not enough homes to go round. I say if you can home them all, given you could get 100 +, then i wish you the best of luck but if your looking and selling to an LFS i would say please re think.

However for information on breeding check out the FAQ's section on here it helped me alot

I know about the VTs and personally I would have prefered in using some "culled" half-moons and delta tails --- beautiful tur/red butterfly male I had my eye on....

But the dealer went bust and I was stuck with nothing else --- and I'm not paying a LOT of money on the hopes of the fish breeding with no experience in breeding beforehand.

As for the homes, I do have them :hyper:

My girlfriend is starting this as well. She's using crowntails. I keep joking with her that my Oscar wants to place an order for 20. LOL Based upon her experience, you'll know when the right time is to switch to more expensive fish. Personally, I'd say breed all of the VT you want...but then I'm a VT fan. LOL I like the other tails too...but I've always owned VTs in the past. I know...I'll never win an award, but I like cool fish period, no matter what the breed is. ;)

yeah, it won't make me any friends on this board, but VTs need love too. ;)

You could always do what my grilfriend is doing. You can seel crowntails on aquabid, they just don't make as much money. But, then...they cost much either.
