Nano Fish Discussion

Good point TT. Am currently setting up a 30L nano tank for a single male betta. Still cycling at the moment, but hopefully it will be stocked soon!

Okey dokey then, I'll take the male female ratios off the betta splendens. Is it just B.Splendens, or is it the other species too?

Tek oot.

Thanks mate, I plan to!

Great thread. Would love to see it pinned. I know many people keep shrimp tanks of nano size. Maybe those too could be added to the list? Also, a female betta splendens would do fine in a three gallon. :)

It said 1m 1f before but now I'm a little confused. Did that mean one male or one female or one male and one female

Obviously, only the first of the two would work

Oh, I could see how you would be confused. Definitely meant OR. Last update I read just had one male, but I feel it would not be fair to leave out the females as they make excellent small tank stock. Lighter and shorter fins make them less prone to diseases found in nano aquariums. Plus, they are usually cheaper and may not kill any shrimp you add with them.

Actually it did mean 1 male and one female but I'll add females back on when I have the time. Question, can the other bettas be kept in pairs?

What diseases, atti?
Typically fin rot/fin melt, but a few others as well including infection from tail biting, lethargy from generally less stable water quality, reduced slime coat production, etc.

I believe many of the wild types can. Smaragdina, imbellis, etc. they typically need larger tanks though.

What about neon tetras? I've got a 60L tank (40cm2). I like the idea of a betta but what would be good to go with it in maybe a small shoal. You also mention my LFS probably won't have this stock - so where do I get them??! Based in W Yorkshire.

A betta should be kept alone if in a tank smaller than a 10 gal enpxcept for a snail. Rasboras are normally ok.

neons need to be kept in a 20 gallon tank....

I wouldn't go that far, I've had cardinals in a 65l before.

That said, we class nano as being 40l or less, and I wouldn't suggest a shoal of neons in a 40l.

well really depends on the dimensions really but its best for them!
