haha, just found this about the hairgrass:

Mines about 24"?
This is a good example of why it is important to use the latin name. The three hairgrasses are Eleocharis acicularis and Eleocharis `parvula`, both of which stay low and are used in the fore and mid ground. What you have is Eleocharis vivipara, which is very much a background plant and one that has grown to two feet for me, before I cut it back.
