for those of you that haven't read my post titled "bad news"
just a little while ago my cat contracted a bad urinary track infection
it was a very emotional time seeing my cat convulse and go into shock throughout all of the trama, tests and vet visits
after weeks of medication, worry and a rediculous vet bill he pulled through and is now off of the medication

i thought everything was well, but in all the commotion over the cat i didn't realize that my guinea pig has stopped drinking
this morning when i checked his water bottle and it was full, it dawned on me that this had happened the last few days
he had also been eating only small portions of his pellets and hay (although he is still scarfing down his fruits and veggi's)
i picked him up and he didn't feal right
he felt light and uneaven
if any of you have ever held a guinea pig, they are plump and slightly heavy for such a small package
i could feal some of his bones and when any presure is applied to his thinning little tummy his strain as if he is in pain, of at least uncomfortable
after the cat i can not afford another vet bill
my guinea pig is only 3 years old
his specific breed i have been successfully keeping til the age of 5
it seams a bit like he is shutting down out of old age
but he is not yet old
i just want to cry
i know these things happen and i have done everything in my power to provide everything in every aspect needed for my animals
they are so well taken care of it breaks my heart if they live a day under their estimated lifespan
i feal so helpless and irresponsible for not being able to afford another vet bill
i took a seringe of cool water and vitamins ind hand fed him 2 full seringes of water, which he readily gulped down
he was fealing a bit thin the past few days but i chopped it up to the heat
i have a fealing it may be much worse

i don't know what else to do :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

oh my god...
i nominate those pics for POTM... that way only one of the pics needs one more nomination cause i give them all a nom..
adorable.. and im not a big fan of guinea pigs but that is the cutest one ever!!

you managed to get through the cat situation, i read all about it and replied... im glad oskar is on the full recovery road. keep hand feeding your little guy / gal there... and i keep my fingers crossed for you's

Hi Pointy_kitty :)

I'll second the nomination for the first picture. He is so cute!

And, I hope he recovers soon.

Try feeding him yummies such as grass or dandelion leaves. I know you've been keeping piggies for a while, but see if you can get in touch with an expert who can advise you over the phone about him, or that you can take him to see them. They can't treat him but they can probably tell you what it is! GL!

Awwww...how cute! I especially like the third picture :)

Sorry to hear your "Giggly Pig" (our neighbor's daughter had a Guinea Pig when she was six and called it a "Giggly Pig") isn't doing well. You are not an irresponsible pet owner - from the pictures I've seen, you take very good care of your pets. Things just "happen" with animals (and people) sometimes, no matter how well they're taken care of. It's one of the few downsides to animal keeping. I hope your little buddy gets better. Hugs and prayers to you.

thanks guys :-(
i'm phoning into the vet today to see if he can have the same antibiotics they gave my cat (in smaller doses)
its for stones and any infections

hey guys
i found out the med i gave my cat cannot be given to the piggy as it will kill him
but i don't think thats the problem anyways
for those of you who don't know guinea pigs can live from 3-7 but most commonly 3.5-4.5 years
well i was looking through some pictures i realized that yoshi isn't 3, he is over 4 years old
meaning that he is most likely shutting down of old age to die :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(
i'm so upset
and today he is worse
i checked on him around 2 and he was lying on his side, almost on his back
he hadn't touched his food or water and he was very lethargic
keep in mind this guinea pig is like a dog
when he sees you he gets excited and bucks and wants you to tickle him and pet him
but he was just lying there,
staring at me
as if to say he was to tired to live
i felt like he was giving up on me
so i lifted him out and began to syringe feed him vitamin water
he pirked up and was happy to see me but was still depressingly quiet
when i shifted him to a more comfortable possition on my lap he squeeled in pain
i can't tell but i think its his hips or his tummy
he's limping pretty bad and is shakey when standing on a non-solid surface
he is constantly lying down
he can't jump, and he can't climb like usual
he looks thinner

i am very close and aware of my animals and every time my guinea pigs began to shut down of old age i would know from day 1
their last few months are always hell
alot of people overlook it but much like dogs,
an old guinea pig is very likely to become constipated, or sore, as their stomachs and bowels begin to shut down
some guinea pigs get sore hips
and some just stay lethargic hiding their pain
its really heartbreaking to witness
i once had to care for a parapledgic guinea pig (he had a spinal disease he had gotten from a parasite, since he came from obviously inexperienced and bad breeders)
i had to feed him, water him, bathe him and help him go to the washroom, then clean up after him
people underestimate how animals can be in pain just like humans before they die

 I wish there were something I could do. I would take him to the vet, if you really care about an animal, then no money or bills should stop you from love.

you don't understand :-(
its not just like i won't pay $50 for him to go to the vet
i am working my butt off to raise money for a college fund
if you haven't seen it i just recently posted that my cat became ill and had to be taken to the vet
he is better now but my father had to pay the vet bill
i said it was his cat because i was embarassed that he had to pay the bill for me
but he is my cat
it was almost $400 and that was just to give a few meds and diagnose
we couldn't get him x-rayed ($90) and on top of that he was at risk to needing surgery
this was only a couple of weeks ago (and thank god he pulled through)
it will cost me $50 to get Yoshi (the guinea pig) in the door, and from there on it will cost big time for even the smallest actions
if i couldn't afford the first almost $400 vet bill do you think i can afford another?
if he gets any worse, rather then see him suffer i will pay the $50 out of my college funds to get him in the door and if he needs any treatments he will unfortunatley have to be euthanized

sorry if i sound upset with you
i'm very sorry
i'm just not in a happy position :-( :-( :-( :-(

I'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who loves their pets like you do, Chelsey.

Good Luck!
