More Cory Eggs

Hi trace1 :)

I'm glad the 6 remaining fry are doing well, but what happened to all the others? Even though you have to expect some of them to die at the beginning, that a lot of die off. Do you have any idea what went wrong?

Are you even sure they are dead or could it be you just can't see them? It's important to try to figure out what happened so you can avoid the problem with future spawns.

hi inchworm :D
there may be more but i'm struggling to see them, also i had a filter running over the eggs & as they hatched a day before i expected them to some may have gone in the filter, i did turn it of as soon as i realised.
i just in the process of trying to give the tank a really good clean & try and get rid of the little bit of sand that is in there.
would they be ok with a full water change or is it best not to do that ???
i have been doing daliy water changes as well they have an air line in there & heater & some snails which i'm trying to get out as well.
i feel bad that i've done something wrong, but thinking about it i never saw all the 1's that hatched so i suppose the filter could have got some of them before i came down :-( :-(

Hi trace1 :)

Please don't feel bad. The first time is always a big learning experience. Next time you will know better what to expect and all will go well.

I suspect the filter might have picked some of them up too. They are just about helpless when they first hatch even though, once they do learn to swim, you will be surprised how strong they can be at a very young age.

Once the eggs are there, the tank no longer needs to be cycled. You will be in total control of it's aeration and cleanliness, so you can take the filter out when you move the parents.

While I wouldn't suggest moving the fry at this point, just to clean the tank, if you take some water out, add some, take it out, etc., it shouldn't hurt them at all. Just be sure that the water is dechlorinated and is at the same temperature.

:D

right i've had a really good clean up of the tank, been at it for the last couple of hours & now i can see them better :D i've managed to count around 14 so far more than i thought so a lot happier now :hyper: :D & bottom of the tank looks loads better as well.

hi fishkeeper
i have tried getting pics of them but being as they albinos & tiny i can barley find them, as soon as i can get some decent pics of them i will post them i promise, my kids have nicknamed them sperm :*) lol

Its good that you found some more of the fry. I did the same thing when mine first hatched. After all the eggs were gone I only counted like 10. The next day I found a lot more. Next time I will know there are a lot more in the tank that I just could not see. Keep us updated on their progress

Hi trace1 :)

I'm glad you found some more fry and that you have gotten your tank in order. Now it will be much easier.......notice I said easier, not less work!

i have 2 bronze and 2 peppered i know they need to shaol/group but i saw here u can mix the varieties though, also wot conditions do ya need for these to spawn??? as i have several fish im thinking of using for my old tank but apart from danios which were real easy im gonna try others now.

hi all
just thought i would give you an update, well the fry are doing ok still, plus the adults have spawned again this morning at a quick count theres over a hundered eggs in there now, seperate tank to the fry of course.
i do have 1 question thou, the microworm culture i've got what do i need to get another 1 going, i know i need oats, but is it dried yeast i need as well ?? as with all the new eggs i think i need to get another going lol

Hi trace1 :)

Good for you and your corys!

It's always a good idea to have an extra microworm culture going, and you will need to restart or refresh the one you have every few weeks. I keep 3 plastic shoe boxes going, but that's probably more than necessary.

To start a culture, just boil some oatmeal or make it in the microwave. Sprinkle a little dried yeast over the top and spread your old culture over it. In a few days it will be going well. The oatmeal should be thicker than you would want it to be if you were going to eat it, but not so thick that the microworms cannot penetrate it. If it's too thin, it will wear out too quickly. You will see what I mean when you have experimented a bit.

This is how I manage my cultures, but this is one thing that has a lot of room for variation. There is no one "right" way to do it. I make new oatmeal every two weeks or so. Much longer and the cultures slow down and smell bad too. Of my 3 boxes, one is older than the others and this one I get rid of. Then I divide one of the newer ones into two boxes (which have been prepared for them with the oatmeal and yeast) and add more oatmeal and yeast to feed the second one. The one that was fed will then become the "old" one and will be productive more quickly than the ones being started from scratch.

Feeding the microworm culture just involves adding some of the cooked oatmeal and some yeast. I mash it in with a fork and stir it around to combine them as well as I can. They will rise to the top quickly if the resulting mixture is not too thick. :D

hi inchworm
thanks for that, thought i had read that i needed yeast, will go shops in a bit & get the bit i need.
think maybe the culture i already got going needs some oats & yeast in as well.
worse thing is i hate the smell of it, not very good with things that stink lol & will probally have to hide the oats as my 8 year old son loves proridge as well  .
i got hubby to move his stereo stuff as well so i didn't have to move the fry tank, tht way i can sit here & look at my babies lol  :hey: :D

Sounds like you have some very healthy cories! Keep up the good work

hi all
just an update, well the eggs that were laid the other day they have hatched, the mommy have laid some on the tank cleaner so i moved it into the fry tank & they have hatched :hyper: :hyper: .
nearly didn't notice them, after only 10 days i had forgotten how small they are when they hatch. so back to eye strain looking for them again, the other 1s are at least 4 times the size of the new 1s, they grow so quick ( shame kids aint the same lol ) :hey: :hey:

Hi trace1 :)

I'm glad you let us know about this batch.

Cory fry usually seem to be growing so slowly at first that one of the most satisfying things is comparing them to the next batch to come along. It's then that you realize what a good job you have been doing right along! :D
