Marine Journal - 159l

I have a spare heater in the bucket, set at the same temperature as my tank. I have then taken the bag and floated it in the bucket, this way it will keep the temperature consistent. I am now dripping my tank water into the bag (1 drop per second) with air-line hosing (knotted). I'll go and test the water, thanks. ;)

They are gorgeous fish, one of my favourites - I have one in my tank :good: Post some pics soon please :snap:

Thank you Seffie, my Hawk is a bright red, fading to pink on the underside. I'll most likely post more images tomorrow, when the tank lights are on. ;)

The Hawk has settled in really well, better than I had previously suspected. He's quite active, and doesn't come close to the front very often, so here are the best pics I could take for now.

There is quite alot of brown algae now, especially on the front. I still need to purchase more CUC, how's this?

6 Cerith Snails
7 Turbo Snails (Astrea Sp.)
5 Nassarius Snails
3 Halloween Hermits (purchased)

I got recommended some snails a few weeks back in another thread, but I can't seem to find them all in one place - will this be enough for my clean-up crew? Maybe a star or two a few months down the line? (brittle/serpent)

I'll try feeding my Hawk today, with some frozen Mysis - I believe you can also feed them Krill, Brine Shrimp, Silver Sides? Is there anything I can add to increase the nutrition of these frozen foods? Also, has anyone used the product 'Garlic Guard'?

Sorry about all of the questions, thanks. :good:

New Era and others do vitamin liquids that you can defrost with the frozen food, that are supposed to increase the nutrition of the food. Are they any good? Pass, never used them  There are a few people I know that highly recomend them though :good:

All the best

Thanks Rabbut, I'll check New Era's products, see what's to my liking. :good:

Will it stress the fish out a lot if i re-arranged the rock work again? I really dislike how it looks. Also, on Sunday I will purchase a low-bay standard halide fixture, 250W. I believe this will be ok? If I also purchase a 13,000K E40 lamp?

EDIT: He's eating today, took some frozen Mysis right from my hand!

Good point Rabbut, thanks.

I'm not going to buy another halide fixture, it turns out the one I currently own also takes 150W RX7's. I'll just purchase one of these lamps, which will hopefully be enough for the majority of corals. Since I don't have T5's, I'll go with a 13/14,000 kelvin bulb. I've had a good look at the place you purchased your halide fixture from Rabbut, they seem to have some very reasonable prices for lamps/bulbs, how is their build quality?

Good on the lamps and balasts and the fitting iteslf, though the bracket is a bit flimsy, but for the price, I thought it was a good deal

I have just recieved 4 spare 14000K lamps with the Rs7 interface from them, so across the origional and the spares, I have sufficient lamps to last untill October 2015 on a 12hr photoperiod :hyper: The lamps colour is garrenteed for 6000hrs, but will likely go way longer with suspect light ouput and running temperatures. I could sort you out one at work on Staurday if you like, as TBH, I only got 4 to make use of the postage discount  Drop me a PM if interested ;)

All the best

Right, update.

I have asked for a replacement on my first metal halide (250W + 2 24W T5), it should hopefully arrive within the next two weeks. I am also ready for my next purchase - a Lionfish most likely, i will have to go for a Fuzzy Dwarf rather than the Fu Manchu as they are readily avaliable. Just one more thing, rather than going with the expensive Golden Dwarf Moray is there any other eel that grows 18" or under? I've searched but nothing seems to come up, the Banded Snake Eel caught my eye but that grows far too large.

Pictures soon to come.

Nice flame hawk, they're awesome fish! Mine will eat of of my hand as well.

For the lionfish... flame hawks don't get all that big. I would be worried it might get eaten when the lion grows larger.

Nope. About the next smallest easily found eel is the Snowflake (Echidna Nebulosa). I've heard reports of them growing from 24" to 30 something inches. If your tank is 42 gallons then it may be enough to keep one. They generally don't prey on fish if well fed. Snowflakes have flatish teeth used for crushing things. and they eat mainly crustaceans so shrimps and crabs will get eaten eventually. Now if they get the opporunity to take a fish, then they may take it. Just note that it's not the norm for this type of eel.

Reef Central states that Hawfish can be kept w/lions in general. It also says that hawks are best if added last. *I don't think it'd be good to keep slow and lounging fish with an eel, though. If it sits in front of the eels face (or nearby) then it's asking for it.

Thanks, so you're saying i could squeeze a Snowflake in there? Interesting, they're are readily avaliable for purchase. 30" is pushing it quite a bit, but they arn't guaranteed to grow that large, so i'll probably give it a go. The Snowflakes generally come small in size, which will give my hawk time to grow along side it.

The White Ribbon Eel (Ghost Eel) would be my first choice, but no where seems to stock them. :shout:

Good point about the mobility of the hawk and lion, i'm hoping they mature before the Eel gets large enough to devour them.

Thank you for your concern N3ont3tra, but the Fu Manchu grows under 4", with the Hawk growing slightly bigger. They're great fish, and tame well, thanks for the comment. :good:

Right, my Flame Hawk has got a rather large swollen eye, with some kind of white substance behind the eye. I believe it has been stung by my large aiptasia anemone, which needs destroying still . . .

Anything that can help with the swelling? That is reef safe?

Images to come shortly!

EDIT: Just ordered a White Ribbon Moray, which surprised me since they seem to be ridiculously hard to find around here. I was going to go for the Snowflake, as suggested, but they had the Ribbon in stock. ;)

It will be with me by Thursday.
