Little Nemo Diary

You seemed to have done a great job so far. Sorry to hear about your current situation :( Hope it can get fixed as soon as possible. I have always wondered the entire process of breeding Clown fish. So thanks for the detailed info :)

Ah that's a real shame about them getting sick and dying. Do you suppose that there is some bacterial/viral infection in the water? Maybe housing a UV lamp above the tank would help combat its spread and aid the fishes recovery?

I'm not quite sure how they got ill, but regardless I dealt with it. The one from clutch 2, fortunately survived the ordeal and rejoined his siblings yesterday. He has not eaten since I added him to the hospital tank, and today I gladly saw him nibbling away at flake with the others. His belly is no longer bloated, but he still has slight pop eye, which hopefully will go away but I don't think it will. If it doesn't, I may end just keeping him.

It seems with him, I caught it early enough and the dip + formalin treatments got rid of it.
No one else since has gotten any of the symptoms and are doing well, so hopefully it has passed by.

I'll start doing regular updates again soon, they're getting to be big boys :)

Ive not been on here much because of work recently, gutted yto hear about the troubles you had. Ive always wanted to try raising some clowns. Mine were sold as a breeding pair, they just avent done there thing yet. Really enjoy seeing your pictures!

Ok, hopefully now will have some more constant updates.
Here are some pictures of the little devils from a few days ago.

Clutch 2 is now 69 days old
and
Clutch 4 is now 43 days old

Here's a picture of boss who's black pigment on his caudal fin seems done with, he's even starting to show some black on his pectoral fins now (finally!)!

And everyone together (mostly)!

The poor little fish from clutch 2 who survived his illness and almost completely normal now, it looks like his pop eye has gone down quite a bit and he has no sign of a bloated belly at all. Hopefully his pop eye continues to decrease, but otherwise he is once again well :)
I've had no health/illness problems since.

I've been having a ton of problems getting any new clutches to survive and i'm not quite sure why, most have completely died and my most recent (clutch 8) had only about 10 fry hatch, only 2 of which survived to day 2. Those two are still alive and are currently 6 days old. They are doing well and are eating BBS.

So I believe it is safe to assume that something is going on between the eggs being with mommy and daddy and then being moved to the fry tank. I'm changing things up a bit. I have another clutch due to hatch next week, and for these guys I am leaving them in the tank to hatch and will be implementing a DIY larval snagger (pictures to be posted once it's made). Hopefully this way it eliminates many factors which could cause their death and should ensure an almost complete 100% hatch rate.

by DIY larval snagger do you mean a fry catcher?

wouldnt some hose to syphon them into the tank be easier?

Yes a fry catcher. With this contraption i'll be able to simply put it in the tank and then go to bed and wake up the next morning with lots of little babies (hopefully) waiting for me to feed them! The snagger will basically work as an air lift which creates suction and siphons the babies up into a carrier as they hatch. Hopefully with the way I'll be putting it together, I won't even have to turn off any filters or pumps.

Alright. Well since clutch 8 is due tomorrow night, i've been working on that larval snagger and here's the results thus far (not yet complete):

It's basically a carrier with a hole cut into the side and wedding veil material glued into it, the carrier is going to have a hole drilled into the bottom of it where the pipe is resting on. Then pvc pipe will go through that hole and the end of it will have a funnel attached. This whole thing will be acting as an air lift to suction up the fry, so a rigid airline tube will be on the side of the pvc pipe, connected to an air pump. Finally, a small blue LED will be placed where the funnel and pvc pipe meet, hopefully helping to direct the light-following larva into the pipe.

Incase you didn't get all that, here's what it will look like:

Color key:
Red = carrier
Orange = veil material
purple = pvc pipe
blue - funnel
green = rigid airline tubing
pink (hard to see dot) = Single LED

And the black arrows show the larva's unharmful pathway. Hopefully I'll get this done by tonight so I can try it out to make sure it actually works. Tried it out partially last night and it was doing great, so i'm not worried :)

I didn't see a picture of clutch 7 on here, so thought i'd post a couple pictures of them. Only two of them left :)() but they're doing well regardless. Should be starting meta today or tomorrow, they seem to be a little late in development.

Here's a picture from Day 7, with his full yellow tummy of BBS

And one from today, Day 10. Still with a fully belly and starting to turn more orange in color.

And then of course, the big boys, a group picture. Clutch 2 is 73 Days old, and Clutch 4 is 47 Days old. Boss's pectoral fins are still gaining black pigment but it's still not noticeable enough to capture with my camera.

looking forward to the updates.

what you going to do with the fry? :good:

Once they get large enough, Clutch 2 is getting there, they will be going to my work to be sold. A few of them are going to close friends/co-workers though.

Thanks for the continuing support everyone :)

how much would they go for? :p

I might be urged to get a few clowns and possibly breed them

( in a years time or so )

PS : I love this Diary. Its been exciting reading it :lol: :good:
