See I would also love a betta, but anything I get I would like to breed at one point and I wouldn't know where to begin.

And yeah not all Petco's are bad there are a few that have true fish people and would love to take care of the fish if they could.

Sorry for not quoting again

bettas are not hard to breed as the cost of doing everything is, its a big investment.

Well money wise I could probably spend less on something else and get a lot more money. Are Betta still getting sold? I always see them in those cup thingys and it's like they're always there.

Ok folks -

I like my local petco. They special order for me, take my criticism, are willing to learn, and have given me good advice with plants. I sat and talked to the manager about the cichlid section there and talked to her about how it was in disarray and the hazards of selling the wrong type of cichlids and the next time I came in the section was pristine. Whenever I see something wrong in my Petco I point it out and it gets fixed.

As a pleco and a betta owner - I would say their personalities are on completely different wavelengths. Both are very personable but are so different you can't compare the two. (and can confirm SOME wild betta types will not kill each other.. I am going to be housing a pair in a long tank soon)

Fancy Goldfish scare me, regular goldfish are cool pond fish.

The only downside to buying bettas from a big store (petsmart, petco, etc) is there is no way of knowing the age or parentage of the betta.. I will probably only buy my bettas from breeders after losing Sully to likely old age after only a month or so of ownership.

Several comments I will comment on. They're spread out on several pages so I won't be wielding the quote button

@ : a proper shoal is about a dozen.
Well, a man-made shoal of 12 is reasonable but in the wild if a shoal of 12 was there the colony would die I'm guessing :p .

@ comocrayfish- Goldies for the win!

@ whoever bring up the worst fish topic - I do not believe in ' worst fish '. There are fish that do not belong in aquariums but worst fish? I could not think of any. There are fish which are inbred, mass produced, poorly cared for, abused, dyed, genetically engineered, starved or other horrible things, but worst fish? I would not go so far as to say that.

@ whoever commented on me never having kept a betta - I have not Because I do not wish to give my dollars to a company which treat fish that way.

@ general public- I'm going to a uni open day today with a mates son. Boring :zz . Hopefully there's a saussie sizzle though. ;)

Yes TT... I was referring to inside a home aquarium, certainly not the wild.
