Large Empty Tank And Thinking Of Oscars.....

oh wow the Botia is stunning proberly the best looking loach i have seen

Going back to the gold sev (blatently ignoring posts re baby urau or choccies   ) I have just had a thought while doing a wc on my 180. You will have an empty 180l tomorrow, put the gold in that till the weekend. A couple of days in a smaller tank might (only might) stop him being a pest, it's worth a try. :good:

What sort of aggression is it? is the gold just chasing and harrassing the others? This is just annoying behavior there are enough fish in the tank for this to be spread amongst the others without causing too much stress. This sort or aggression you can leave him in the tank if you want to keep him. Unless he is picking on one particular fish, this will cause this fish to possibly stop eating and become stressed. If that is the case re-home the gold.

Chasing and nipping fins or biting is more of a nuisance to the other fish and does tend to starts stressing them out more if he is biting then re-home again.

Full on head to head with the other fish trying to entice lip locking I would re-home the gold asap, if he/she tried to go head to head with Duce or the diadema the sev will be injured.

Watching Harry annoy Tinker & Tailor when they were together it takes an awful lot of niggling to make an oscar have a go back (Saying that Tinker & Tailor are very placid oscars) The sev probably wouldnt even entertain the idea of having a go at Keith yet.
ive caught him lip locking with the rotkeil and he tried it with the diadema but couldnt fit his lips around as the diadema has a much larger mouth  he is chasing the rotkeil causing him to hide behind the decor and has chased Duce(texas) a few times too... the only fish he is scared of is Keith as he is huge!!!!!!

maybe its time to put him in the spare tank for a while and see how the tank settles without him. ill leave it until the weekend and if hes still naughty then its solitary confinement for him im affraid.....

anyone want a 6-7 inch gold sev

i hate this tank being in the garage

just been to check on them and it seems that everything has turned around..... all the fish are having a go at the gold sev now evn the rottie! the rottie has a few marks on his side now too and i dont know from who. duce is chasing the rottie and the gold sev and the diadema seems bothered by no one but Keith. although keith isnt really doing anything bad just his presence its enough
i think ill put the gold sev in the 180 tomorrow after ryan has been to get the other fish and see how it goes for a few days. i just hope the rottie isnt a target then

I know what you mean about having a tank of great fish, which I rarely get to see, plus when aggression flares up I'm left second guessing. I rescued my Yellowtails last night, as something has been inflicting nasty flank wounds, even sadly killed one poor fella. It could be the "jousting" between the Yellowtails themselves (in which case moving them was pointless), but it could easily have been the Humpheads; Barilius; Lionheads...

its a good excuse to move them inside the house :hey:

why cant fish keeping be easy...............?

I've yet to get anything close to putting it into practice, but have you thought about say setting up an old PC next to Kieth & friends with wireless internet, so you can spend more time around them?

You definately need to get them moved into the house, nothing better than sitting on the sofa and watching the fish. Now if I was allowed to get rid of the sofa and put a tank there and sit on bean bags it would be heaven, completely surrounded by tanks lol. Or how about a kitchen/fish room like mine

star you joke but i think you are deadly serious

after christmas and new year etc i think i will sell my 4ft tank and stock and move them into the conservatory where i can keep a close eye on their antics. i need a cabinet making and hood though first
after watching them tonight i think the 2 sevs might have to be moved. the gold sev is now the victim and becoming stressed and the rottie hardly ever comes out from the corner as i think its too worried. my tank has become semi aggressive over the last 4 days.... i just dont think the rottie can stand up to the bigger fish as he is the smallest by far at 5-6 inches.

Sadly hubby is not keen on the idea of bean bags, the kids are

I have seen your ad for your friends RTBS that would work ok in your tank, I have one and its a great dither/decoy for squabbles.

yeah i remember seeing him in your tank. maybe an idea

im off to collect another fish tomorrow thats being donated by a mate and i might just get the lfs texas too and remove the sevs. Duce seems to have settled a bit too well and has become the aggressor so i might need to try and keep him busy with more texas.

this could be a big mistake but i have seen more than 1 texas work in the same tank. Keith has been injured somehow and has a few scales missing near his tail fin and as i didnt see what happened i cant point any fingers...........

this will change the stocking to

1 x oscar
3 x texas
1 x diadema
1 x bgk
1 x L190
2 x jaguar catfish

my other option would be to remove the gold sev and the texas (duce) and try to find more calmer fish. the diadema, the rottie and keith all seem fine with each other and ive seen no aggression between the 3, yet

what do you guys think?

is it anarchy waiting to happen with 3 texas or will they keep the squabbling amongst themselves? i know from my research that texas cichlids can be aggressive but like i said i have seen it work.

Personally I think the texas will be more interested in chasing each other than the rest of the tank.
